The accountant is still trying to figure out how I managed to get billed for 5 oil filters and three engine oil changes over four months when the boat never saw the water! Once he figures it out he will pay that bill.

I showed the boatmad forum to Lorne Campbell and these were his thoughts:

1. The raceboat runs with outward turning props while the heavier
production boats with props at lower height run with them turning inward.
Turning them out won't increase speed. ICE Marine reckons the handling is
slightly better in certain conditions (including quartering seas) with them
inward turning - especially with the props set fairly deep as on the
production craft.

2. The Bladerunner being discussed is the first ever production one (a 1999
boat) and there have been a number of modifications on subsequent craft: The
tunnels have been raised at the aft end; main hull chines were modified;
fuel tanks are no longer placed in the sponsons, etc.. All these improve
the quartering sea handling. Raising the tunnels aft allowed the bow to
lift more easily, which reduced the tendency to clip the tops off waves in
certain conditions.

3. Tony was running very quickly when the boat turned over in its first
race, as they were trying to catch up having made a navigation error - in
addition the boat was fitted with sponson fuel tanks, one of which was
nearly dry while the other was almost full (a fuel system hiccup); one of
the reasons wing tanks are not used now. It was a race accident. The
Bladerunner can be pushed very hard in turns but in the end, like a modern
race car, it will bite without much warning and it is pointless to try to
find the limit - it turns fast enough without going near it. Inexperienced
drivers could get carried away.

4. There is quite a lot of silverware in the ICE Marine office. The race
boat was 4th in the Worlds (about a 20 boat field) during its first year
with the engines not running properly at all. They were second in the
Europeans twice - the second time they won the rough race and were in front
in the calm race (beating a good Skater cat) when a gearbox went on the last
lap. They still came second. They also won the round the island race
twice. The reason it stopped racing is that you have to go to Dubai to get
a 6 litre race these days and ICE are using the money to run the business
and develope the new 35.

5. Air starvation could be possible but probably because the air coming
through the cowling intakes is rushing past the engine's own intakes and
causing a low pressure. A large additional scoop on top of the cowling
might help and baffles inside to slow up the air near the engines intakes
and stop vortices, might also help.

6. Please remember that ICE Marine is always willing to talk to any owner
who is having problems with a Bladerunner - just call them. The combination
of ICE Marine and Lorne Campbell know more about these craft than anyone
else - bar none! The first raceboat to this concept was designed in 1975
and was a winner. There have been 11 different designs over the years
(including the 1992 4 litre World Champion) before the Bladerunner.

Had the same problem with sponson mounted tanks But was overcome with a supply & return system re-design. Then would only differ by 2 gall or so.

Cool -

Thanks for the info.

I am definately interested in changing the design of the scoops. Adding one behind the radar, scooping air down and into the engine area is the plan for the weekend...

i remember

i remember racing a 2lt and 4lt three pointer
and yes they do take some setting up to get the best out of them,i think it took jim and i 1 year to get the 2lt one sorted , that was after 3 years of trying from other people, and a very fast learning curve with the 4lt one, both of these were for racing not just fun boats , i think the ice bladerunner is a fantastic boat and set up to do the job YOU want it to do will be great ,i would talk to ice marine and tell them what set up you are looking for ,they have done all the R&D they have the info you need and they are nice people to work with
