Seastar helm identification?

I had a look at a Seastar helm that I wanna use with my Mayfair side-ram, it's a 1.7cu.in 1000psi model - I take it that's the standard one and the one I want?

Seastar standard is 1000 psi & works with unbalanced rams (like your mayfair)
Seastar Pro is 1500 psi & works with balanced rams (front mound seastar cylinder)

The 1.7ci is the volume of fluid it pumps for each full revolution.
you can get 1.7, 2.0 & 2.4 CI seastar helms...

the capilano most people use with sidemount is the 1275V which is adjustable from 2.7-5.4 CI..... when set at the lowest setting you will have around 4 turns from lock to lock

It'll work, just take more turns to go from lock to lock, figure out what volume the ram is (one side will be less due to the bar) then you can work out how many turns from lock to lock you will need, then you can decide if that will be okay. most people with capilano run on the lowest setting.

Best bet would be to hook it up to the ram and try it out I guess!

Thanks for your help

i run a 2.4ci sea star helm with side ram and its about 8 turns lock to lock. i would say a 1.7 is way to small. the capilino helm on mid setting with a single side ram was from memory around 4 turns, any more flow and it became too heavy to operate with the small steering wheel

is that 8 turns with a pair of side mount rams or just one? obviously it'll be double if using two rams in parallel.

re: 4 turns at mid setting, that could be due to different ram, I run the imco ram which is quite a bit smaller than the mayfair ram.

I think I'll plumb the 1.7 into the ram, and see how many turns I get from stop to stop on the ram!

on my 1275v/ Imco ram setup, with helm set to max (5.4 CI per revolution) its bang on 2 turns lock to lock when steering from left to right..... right to left is slightly more due to the larger volume .

you's need quite large arms to use it at that setting though!

Hello,
have to jump in...
because have the same problem with a hynautic 2.0 helm(now seastar/teleflex) and want connect it to a side ram

if the steering will get harder to steer if you go with more volume in the helm per rev it must be very soft with 1.7 helm but then it has to many turns.
heard about the capilanos are very hard to steer ?

my hynautic helm set up with a billet hynautic K6 front Ram is hard to... but its ok.

have to dig more in the hydraulic business to get more info on that, specially heavy crane equipment. What i know is that the difference in size from the giving cylinder to the taking cylinder is the key, like a gear set up.

thanks for the interestig thread
