Setting Mercury V6 timing suggestions

According to if you have a spark stabilizer attached. If yours has been removed, your at sea level, your compression at cranking speed is 145 psi or LESS, and your running super unleaded motor gasoline 25 WOT timing is OK.

As I have shared this information on this as well as other boards I suggest using a JSRE TDC gauge to insure your timing pointer where ever it may be located( pointer on flywheel cover OR side of the block ) is dial indicated to dead nut zero , if you do not confirm that it is at zero your wasting your time "trying" to set timing.

Next I suggest to dial indicate ALL the plug holes to make sure there is not an elevated timing point on another hole other than #1. I dial indicate all holes and mark the flywheel at .150" this is 25 degrees times 6 on EVERY engine I build. I find in 90% of the cases people that ASSUME the # 1 hole is the high timing hole and simply set to #1 can cost you a burnt piston as others MAY be elevated above the #1 hole ....

Example: you "ASSUME" that your pointer is at true zero , you advance your timing and shoot timing at WOT and adjust to 25 *. If you would have used the TDC gauge you may find that #1 is indeed at .150" ( 25 * ) BUT #6 is at .200" ( 28 *) at WOT. this error in the wrong situation WILL cost you a the loss of #6 piston..

This crappy fuel as well as an irregular switch box or timer base causing elevated timing can cause a burnt piston. I see it quite often..

If you choose to buy a gauge it has complete
"how to" instructions . Or I will be happy to fax you a instruction sheet but you WILL need a dial indicator to do this job with any degree of accuracy and or success..

( I've sold hundreds of the gauges, I've found as well as the guys thats bought them they are great trouble shooting tool for ignition health and at $75.00 + freight a great buy, we accept PayPal in US currency )
