Hope I am not out of line for asking questions on my first post!?
After many years off the water, I want to get back on and introduce my kids to the joys of blasting across the water. Nothing to do with the fact I have pined for boat ownership since selling my last one.....
Looking at a Marshan 162 but not sure what the max power/weight of outboard the transom/hull would handle safely. More importantly, if someone knows the ideal shaft length and lets me know, then I can target suitable engines.
Boat make: Phantom 19G-R, Bernico F2 Extreme, Ring 15
Engines: Evinrude 115HO, Yam 90

Measure the transom from the keel to the top of where the engine will mount. Shaft length on an outboard is measured from the tilt tube at the top, to the anti-cavitation plate on the gearbox
All of the above is of course assuming a 'sound' (not rotten) transom. That is something that will be getting increasingly hard to find with boats of this age (not just Marshan)

Where to start ? Look for flex cracks at the top of transom and side of engine well
Condition and colour of gel on inside ie black water stains repair jobs and have metal stiffening brackets been added ?
Look at how many holes have been drilled in moving engine height and offset you don't want 20 odd different drill settings as all this will be weakening the original ply in the transom.
Wip off the transom plate the shiny stainless thing that covers the transom and have a good old poke with a bra bawl or sharp slotted screwdriver to test the solidness of ply underneath the glass,
Also check the floor.
If the boat has been well looked after kept undercover in winter or in garage and has it always had a good boat cover left on it
If not haggle as you might need to budget for repair work unless already done competently

So disappointed to say that I missed out on the hull I had my eye on. Made my offer of full asking price 24 hrs too late.
Thanks for the prompt feedback to all that responded.
To anyone that reads this and may have something of interest for sale, I am looking for a similar rig to a Marshan/Ring/Phantom hull......maybe up to 18ft with or without an outboard. I don't have a Range Rover or equivalent for towing, so these amazing 21' rigs are out of the question.
Going back to my last boat, which was a rather smart Driver 510+ Suzuki 140, my unfortunate lasting memory was witnessing Mercury owners turning over their engines for ages, over and over, until they worried about the battery. The engine covers would come off for fiddling. During this time, my Suzuki and any Yamahas etc would have started with first turn of the key and sauntered off for a blast round Loch Lomond.
Do I have an unfounded negative impression of Mercury reliability, or should I continue with my favourable impression of Jap products?
theres a few boats on here for sale recently ,if you search thro the trade section, that might be your size.
I will keep looking for sure. I was a day or so too late for the wee Marshan in the 2nd photo. I had my heart on it and by the time I offered the asking price, it was away.
Amazed and incredibly appreciative of the help and advice offered by so many to a new guy with lots of basic questions.......lots more to follow no doubt, so apologies in advance!
