Side impact protection

After reading the sepa news letter i see that side impact protection is now a must on new builds. whatt exactly is the spec on this? Materials, dimensions, ratings and installation requirements please asap.
I would have done this privately but i feel this is something everyone should have access to.

Many thanks

I believe there is no specific definition of what is required, it is the responsibility of the boat builder to show that they have made sufficient changes as required to ensure the cockpit area is reinforced to protect the crew.
This could be extra layers of kevlar, a second skin inside as per P1, more distance from side to crew etc etc. I'm no boat builder but I'm sure someone who's building boats would know what they need to do.

Adam Younger is the ORC technical rep, I'd suggest you get in touch with him or directly with Puddifoot if you need further information/clarification, I'd imagine the majority of what you'll get on here will be speculation.

Please do bear in mind that none of the changes have yet been ratified by the PBRC so are not yet set in stone. I'm pressing for this to happen ASAP as I feel it's essential everyone knows the score before the new year. I'd imagine (hope!) the RYA will do a full press release as soon as this has happened.

Hope that helps!

James

So this whole new grey area has been put on the shoulders of the builders? Thanks for the quick reply and please do not take this as directed at you but if its been published this is whats happening then a spec should be in place. i really feel this will kill off a once great class.

Having spoken to JP he told me a whole different story to Larby's above - it seems we will get a spec and it's coming soon!

Having said that Kevlar and some foam will probably be it I would imagine?

Of course none of these modifications will be free!

And it's unlikely they would have saved Alex Edmunds.

Very, very true. Wouldn't have made the slightest bit of difference from what I saw but there we go eh.

Cookee, I'd be interested to hear what JP had to say to you (prob by PM?) as I can't see how it would or should differ from what we decided at the ORC meet.

Side impact

Im thinking about some side impact protection for my p18, so getting T boned at 60 to 70mph by a 600kg boat would proberly need something like an RSJ each side (bit heavy maybe) it will be interesting to see what the Rya come up with !

Sadly no. I'm used to that kinda crap from the old ORC committee, but I was led to believe this new one would be different... I still live in hope!

Wow, judging by the amount of interest in the new rules and new boats being built, should be a healthy fleet in OCR next year!

OCR Fleet is looking much more healthy !! Promises to be a good season.
Just be sure to order your boats prior to any design changes.
Mine is already ordered and there are plenty of used ones about.

Side Impact

Not going to make a habit of posting generally on ORC issues but:
We have only had one meeting so far, as everyones calendars clashed, it was very long and appears to have been productive.
What we are trying not to do is to have a knee jerk reaction and to impose rules that will upset everyone. This unfortunately takes a little time, consultation with interested parties, thought and research.
We really don't need people trying to misread our efforts, we are doing it for you guys, believe it or not!
So please bear with us. We have already defined "New" as boats ordered after 01 Jan 2012, to give everyone some time to digest the problem.
As soon as we have results they will be published.
In the mean time Happy Christmas to everyone and if you need to know anything talk to the RYA office, who will assist as much as they can.
