skeg profiles

i just filling and sandinging the skeg on my cle gearbox and am thinking would it be worth reprofiling the skeg to a wing shape to generate lift to off set the prop torque. instead of a tab. or is it a shite idea.

Not a shite idear, but you can buy the profiles. Theircalled torque tamers and fit directly onto the trailing edge. Latter gearboxes, Sportsmasters, had them cast onto the skeg, but most people who race ground them off.

why do they grind them off. i,ve seen the rivet on tabs . but going at the back of the skeg they would act like a rudder steering from the back . a wing would provide lift to off set the paddle wheel of the prop?

you would build up one side of the skeg using epoxy filler and then sand to profile.

The torque tab is on the trailing edge of starboard side of the skeg. The water therefore pushes the back of the skeg port side and thus steers the boat left to counteract the tendancy to steer right caused by the prop rotation. If you have hydraulic steering you dont really need a torque tab because its easy to correct the right turn with the wheel. So I guess people grind them off to reduce the skeg profile and thus reduce the unnecessary drag.

Dont know if your idea would work though
