seastar steering
larby ime sure the seastar will be good enough for u as cookie says he has raced with it for years and my pascoe has had it from new the only reason ive changed it is i wanted an adjustable helm i no it relies on a 3\8 unf bolt but if u replace it periodicaly ime sure ule have no agg the steering setup that td is selling isnt my old set up which is what i was joking about now owned by captain chaos

Surely he must've been doing something wrong?!
If it's happened to him twice, what bolt was he using, was he keeping an eye on it and replacing it, and what was he doing to it to make it snap??
Seems he's the only person so far to have one go at all, so if he was doing all the above he must have some pretty bad luck!

Glad to hear the seastars are the same, if i managed to get that side ram setup i'd get the wingplate custom made.

I have a side ram wing plate from a V6 midsection. Don't know if its any use to you or any one else.
No use to me, i run on wire and pulleys.
I'll take a photo at the weekend. Don't want much for it, just be nice to get something else out of the way.

He has several boats that are used for ''Powerboat Experiences'', and so they probably do more hours in a month than you could ever hope to do in a year!

And here's a pic of one, comes standard with the latest Seastar ram, since they uprated it to 350hp.
Compared to the Mercury one at 21 quid plus vat it's pretty good value, only 14.79 and it comes with a nylock!
Got a couple in stock if anyone needs one.

This is correct lots of hours and turns
Interestingly one went on the Suzuki 300 and the other on a Honda 150,
We now change them every season

Bet it scared te cp@p outta your passengers if you were out on a powerboat experience? What happened?

No real drama really just sort of went sideways so the passengers just got really wet. We always carry spare bolts now so we were running again in less than 15 minutes
The Seastar is a really great unit, easy to set up, the only problem we have had is the seals going on one cylinder

hmmm, the whole 'one little bolt' idea really worries me, really wish there was a way to improve that part! Can't see my budget stretching to a new side ram setup though, and it's unlikely someone will want to sell a 2nd hand setup for a promax any time soon!

Have run the sea star system with ARP bolt for over 12 years and never had a problem, I have run this system with close to 400 HP at times. All you need to do is check the bolt to make sure it's tight now and again, slop on the bolt is the enemy of this system. I've run it on a 260 EFI modified to the new 300XS with no problems, make your own mind up, but without spending over double there is no other system. my opinion for what it's worth.

larby,
there really are lots n lots of people around the world using that seastar system. Itsmy opinion that (whilst fkin catastrophic when they let go) there really isnt THAT many people who you hear of having issues. Buy the system you can afford and a box of replacment bolts. Its on my 21 and has been just fine.

Thanks for the opinions guys... Chaos, you're right, at the end of the day it's down to the simple fact that i don't think i'll be able to afford a different system!
If something comes up then i'll look at side ram, if not it'll just have to be seastar and i'll see how it goes!
Cheers, James

As far as i can remember I've got seastar on my ring21 and it seems fine, but since your thinking about twin ram systems you might want to ask Darren on this board as he had his twin system replaced this year with sea star so might be selling the old system.
The rams bolted to the transom at 60 degree angle so not the type that longitudinally fits tight to the engine. Think there was a problem lifting the engine all the way up though with this type.
looking forward to seeing your boat in the water

And on yer Ring but on the inside! Puddifoot and Dave Field ended it up in the water with broken ribs after it failing on the bravo set up in Ramsgate a 5 years or so ago. I also rember watching Tom Gajowski driving my old Revenger 25 rib when the bolt went. That was proper spectacular!
I personaly love mayfair steering but it is expensive and boating is all about comprimise.
