Well, I haven't tested it myself, if that's what you're asking.
All my "knowledge" is recycled anyway - the ATF comments mostly comes from Jay Smith on S&F, posts a couple of years back, although I found the viscosity of it on a manfr's website.

Mmm. Maybe I should've researched a bit more before posting that comment - I think you might have called my bluff jw, I can't find anything to back it up other than the original posts on S&F

I initially had the same sort of feeling about it but auto boxes run gears and in transverse engine applications it is also run in the diff so it must be a fairly reasonable lubricant in these situations.

For the actual run I am going to try run 0w20 engine oil.

I figured the power increase by running the 5w30 over the 15w40 that is Volvo spec ( almost 1.5mph! ) will make the risk worthwhile - additionally the actuall run is only 10 minutes worth!

So I figure I may gain at least another 0.5 mph by using this oil. This would place me in the zone for the record....

Other news: I went to my secret freshwater testing location today ( 52.94151N 1.09411W ), and ran several flat out runs ( about 10 seconds at top speed) and got the exact top RPM from the engine. The props will be off at the prop man tomorrow, for him to alter the props to add 200 RPM to the props. This will give me the maximum RPM before hiting the 5000 RPM limit...

Thus is my theory!

And if you copy and paste that into Google earth it goes up one end of the rowing lake! Wow - modern technology!

Damn modern technology! You were supposed to struggle, not find it immediately!

Yes, the rowing lake, 1.2 miles in length. I could get up to the top speed, and hold it for a few seconds before dropping off to stop at the other end.

Flat, long and thin!

Almost perfect conditions to check the props and boat in fresh water. The guys were terribly helpfull, and ran around in their two ribs for a few minutes before each run to chase off the waterfowl ( ducks, geese and swans ) They also kicked off all the rowers for a 30 minute period, so I had the whole facility to myself.

Once the props are sorted I will re-test them there.

Today I ran my modified props.

I maintained 'flat-out' for about 5 seconds, and the revs were 4950! Which is exactly where I wanted them to be.

( it also appears that the actual cutout for the engine is just over 5050, so I have 100 RPM to play with.... )

So things are looking good!

Normally you have a longer run up for the measured mile, kilo, whatever. Expect to see more of a buildup than just 5 sec's.
Guys will take another mile just to build up for a run, it's that last little bit that makes the difference on a record attempt unless you are so far ahead of the game. You will see the extra 100 RPM with a longer build up.

Kor I remember the days running up the dock with another fiver!!

Wow - you are old! A fiver!

Thanks for the tip on the longer run. I figured 100 below due to the changes in oil and increase in power would push me a little more RPM AKA faster. Judging by todays speeds it may just possibly work. Just a litle bit faster, and we are away!
