Trim pump Refilling - Help!

Happy new year everyone - long time since I posted, started doing some boat maintenance today, I thought I would check the trim pump oil level, I removed the bolt where you fill the trim pump oil, which was full anyway but upon putting the bolt back in I couldn’t get it to tighten up. I think I have over tightened it and bust the thread on the housing. My question is:

1. Is this a special bolt that I simply need to replace?
2. Can I try using ptfe tape?
3. Do I need a heli-coil?

Thanks in advance – engine is Yamaha F100a

Its the "reservoir plug" that will not tighten up.

Re-tap the thread. But put some grease around the tap to stop any metal going into the resivour.

Having never done this before I guess you use a kit like this ?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/40PC-PC-METRIC...item3f0077c143

Do you then need a larger reservoir plug?

Thanks again

i did the same what you will find is that if you try put a biger bolt in the head of it will be to big and not turn you will need to use some sort of stud bar so there is no head on it try putting a flat head groove so you can screw in it

He only needs to go up 1 size i.e M4 to M6 not a great deal of difference. If it comes to it the edges of the bolt can be ground off slightly if the bolt head fouls on something and a groove cut in the head to screw it in. But you need the shoulders of the bolt for the washer.

yes that is what you need.

If you look at the diagram of the pump it has a torque setting for the bolt 8.7ft-lb which is not much more than hand tight really, especially if its a steel bolt going into an Aluminium thread. Never a good idea so easy to over tighten.
