using raw water pump on alpha drive

I'v just bought a chriscraft stinger 26 that had merc 5.7 V8's on alpha drives, im going to use the drives but not the engines as 1 is knackered and the other doesnt look too good. so iv just picked up a set of volvo penta AQ311B 5.7's.

i know that all the bell housings, flywheels, clutch plates, ignition and manifolds will just swap straight over but was thinking about the volvo raw water pumps and if i could use them instead of the impeller on my alpha drives? is this possible and what are the pro's and con's of raw water pumps?

thanks

Yeah do it, why not...at least if you do it and the drives explode and you sink we'll know the answer is NO! If it works you'll be making the world a better place.

It is the way to go. Remove the impeller from the drive, blank the water inlet into the boat then run a transom pickup to the engine mounted waterpump.
Better flow, bigger impeller which is now servicable from within the boat.

I have the same setup with Bravo 1 Drives and 383ci motors.

Thanks ian.
But I would really like to use the drives as pick ups as I don't really want anymore seperate pick ups, I already have tabs and will be adding drive showers so the back will be quite cluttered as it is. So do you think it is possible to just use the standard gearbox pick ups with no impella to feed the raw water pumps on the motors?

Hi, in theory yes, a pick up is a pick up but I can`t remember the bore size of the water hose from the drive into the boat. However if you look at the OD size of the hose tail on the Volvo water pump versus the the pipe bore from the water inlet from the Transom plate if the hose fits the tail then it is not a problem but if the pipe is smaller don`t do it in case you starve the water pump at speed.
