Not specifically heard of a knockmeter, but have heard of a knock sensor. Assuming it does the same job, it detects detonation.

Yeh, same thing.
If yer engine is on the borderline, it'll start knocking before it detonates and blows itself to shit. This baby, (allegedly) lets you monitor it.

Most modern car efi systems have it built in so if the engine starts knocking it retards the ignition automatically.

I believe its a microphone with a filter thingy that basically listens for the distinct sound of knocking, which as Mat says is the first signs of detonation. Modern ignition systems have them to allow constant adjustment of the timing keeping it as advanced as possible and thus produce maximum power/efficiency without causing detonation. You could use it to set up your timing but the next time out you may have craper fuel and/or more weight in the boat etc. As you have far more power than you need just set the timing to the value recomended by the experts and don't worry about the 5hp you may have lost by not running it on the ragged edge.

Just pre-empting you here but no you don't need a Lambda (exhaust gas oxygen) sensor either.
