What to do with my bottom??

right so, the work on the new hull continues

after 20quids worth of anti fowl stripper 3 hours of hard work i got about a foot square nearly back to gel!!

the anti fowl isnt the problem, but there is like a grey primer under that the stripper doesnt seem to touch.

i have had someone come take a look and give me a quote to have it blasted with a low pressure wet blaster, he told me he would be able to get it clean as a whistle but the finish he would leave would be textured, almost like a 120grit sandpaper. perfect key to be painted. the problem is is i was hoping to get it to bare gel and polish it.

what are my options, paint/gel/epoxy??? i will be racing in this boat and would like to get the best finish i can within my budget.

cheers all

I had the same problem with Crusher Destroyer, Antifoul was a piece of piss but the primer sucks!!

I used a decent air DA sander with 120 grit, and I got my girlfriend to do the strakes by hand as she wanted to help The stuff eats sanding discs!

After the 120 I filled the dings and scrapes with P38, them went over the whole thing with the DA and 240 grit, then my brother painted it. It's a hell of a lot of work!

We used 383 transport paint with 10% thinner and 10% winter dryer to help it harden up. 2 coats of that and the finish is pretty awesome! I'm going to put 3-4 layers of hard wax on it also, and try to renew the wax everytime she comes out

Be careful with 383 transport paint it will oxidise and fade in normal conditions in little over a year, in marine enviroment it will be a lot shorter, 383 also takes quite a long period of time to fully cure even with an hardener, so be careful not to apply a wax to soon, i have seen it mess it up.

The best way to remove anti-fowl etc from the bottom of the hull without any damage, pitting, roughness etc. is to use cryogenic blasting, i have the only machines capable of doing this in the islands.

Hope this helps.

yeah we're letting the paint cure fully, and she'll be covered & polished regularly to look after it as best we can, rinsed off etc. 2k would have been the better solution but it would've meant stripping every last mm of old paint off, and we're on a deadline & a budget!

Petrol or preferably petrol / acetone mix should take the primer of once the antifoul has been removed

Hmmm, was wondering what cryogenic blasting was and just found the following link if any one else is interested and has not heard of it.

Very interesting

I had a boat done with bicarbonate of soda (I think) and high pressure large volume air and a little water - took everything off and left looking as new gel coat - very impressed! It was quite a few years ago and things have probably moved on by now.

i have just booked someone to come down next weekend and soda blast it.

i have seen the results and they are very good he promises for a 'near perfect' finish depending on the condition of the gel underneath

yes cryo blasting is very interesting my mate has a cryo blaster and is trained to use it, but storage for the dry ice is difficult to find and insurance is expensive. plust the dry ice has a 4 week shelf life, apparently
