Question Worthwhile mods on a 2 litre v6 Mariner??

Hi folks,

What worthwhile modifications can I do to my Mariner 150?

I've read bits about changing the flywheel and stator etc. would this make any meaningful changes, or should I just leave it alone?

Also does anyone know where I can get some uprated nylon/alloy engine mounts (top & bottom).

Cheers,

Steve.

150 mods

don't bother with mods waste of money just buy a bigger engine(200) as for mounts, i don't think you can just buy them, as i said you have to get them made,

I think Larby on here makes them.

Aha fitted a 135 on an 18 Phantom and it went like stink !
I think a 2 litre is well suited to that hull
The best mod would be to get a really decent prop and that needn't be that expensive.
The one we used was thru hub 21 or23 but it had been worked and thinned 60 mph for a135 V6 wasn't bad at all.it was just a pleasure boat lovely to drive, especially offshore with a swell.
You are pretty close to the action in one of them.
On your motor just put a set of new plugs and the blue plug leads some nice fuel and some Mercury racing oil.
Spend the money on the prop and it's got 65 written all over it .

Hi 'Big Dutch'

What are these blue leads? I have standard at present. Are these special?

I use Mercury Racing oil and Shell V-Power fuel.

As for props I use:
20" (small hub) Laser II for skiing.
24" (originally large hub 23") Laser II for normal use - tops out at around 65mph with this prop.
24" Quicksilver chopper prop to try once the nose cone and the CMC hydraulic jack plate are fitted.

Thank,

Steve.

NGK silicone leads your local merc dealer will have them.XR2 standard and they include boots .
It's amazing how much difference even a new heavy duty battery can make with those nice marine terminals .
Keep working the 24 I say balance and printed a little higher on the transom once you have low water pick up sorted getting towards 67
Possibly a set of XR2 carbs but concentrate on the basics.

Waste loads of money if you like or just buy a bigger motor. It's not rocket science more cc + hp = more speed simple

Are you kidding? Don't tell the poor guy he is going to notice any difference in a new battery and new plug leads lol.

Modifying the engine you have really isnt worth it as the gains are minimal and your actually in a really good place where there's alot more power to be had for very little extra by changing powerheads.

You also mention upgrading the to solid mounts which is going to cost you a few hundred quid alone in gaskets / parts etc, but you can buy an xr2 which has 200hp and a heavy duty saddle for nothing these days then sell your engine to recoupe most of the cost.

If you absolutely have to spend money work on the handling rather than power or as others have suggest buy a bigger motor. The shorter the leg the better!

Well our XR2 (5of)experience with 2 litre blocks shows it's vital to have the best spark at the engine and you won't get that with an old battery and HT leads.
Remember you wont see 500 more rpm but all you are looking for is 100 -200 more rpm and on these small blocks every 100 rpm raise is a gain.
The Two litres really need spinning up and then keeping them there.
I never knew an XR2 that developed 200 Hp from racing experience.
The 2.5 XS I had might of but cant see the point in spending huge amounts onan 18 footer

I know of some f2 power heads, just need a starter, fly wheel and electrics and good to go. Your stuff may even swap to it.
Better than throwimg money at mods that may not work or give minimal results.
Have a think about it.

May be interesting for some of you, the XR2 characteristics , we have made in 1997, the power on both engine of this Skater were very close, in the same time we have also made a test on a 2.4carbs with dual plug land & sea hi compression heads, special reeds, and louvers plus velocity stacks, Click image for larger version

Name:	XR2 1995 model power & torque curves.jpg
Views:	1220
Size:	82.4 KB
ID:	38289 I've the curves too...
And later I've made mods on a 2.5 carbs, with a tuner , cylinder heads, reeds, very reliable, this engine still run after 16 years, the parts were furnished by GFORCE TECHNOLOGY.

in added file a power/torque curves of year 1995 XR2 for information.
From a pair of the SKATER 24 class3D flying Oyster , made by land & sea dynomite power bench..

Thumbs up

When Ulrik came over to Guernsey with his brand new bat boat for the world championships I noticed him changing and checking his plugs.Open gap NGK R I queried, shouldn't they be perma gap anti foul as fitted to my new XR2 ?
His answer was they developed 3 Hp more and had been tested on bench dyno.
So there you go 3hp for £36 odd quid more

So what's better then, a 2.5 carb/xri 200hp or a XR2 200hp?

We always ran XR2 (1997) with 15" mid on the 18, 2:1 cle box, 24 worked raker, mech fuel pump and regulator, would run 78.5mph @ 6900, and dyno'd at about 200hp at 7000+.
Boat handles better with short shaft, and motor has a slight backset because of S/S bracket

I'd steer clear of an XR2 if I were you Steve. They were designed for racing and as such, they done the job!
2.5 carb is the best option IF you need a replacement.
Read the Cookee post again, that make sense.

Yes, having done a bit more research a 2.5 carb 200 will fit my requirements if/when I change the engine.

Thank you for all of the input!!!
