Yamaha malta

hello all

need some advice on an Yamaha Malta outboard , the motor runs ok but not sure if any water is going round the engine should there be a tell tail and where on the motor is it, also half way down the leg there is a rubber cap which is slightly damaged would stop water circulating or could the impeller be broken, any advice welcome as i am new to this.

thanks boogty

yamaha

Yamaha 3hp may be a bit small for the boys on this forum ! pull the gearbox and check out the impellor, 4 bolts underneath and undo the bolt under the grommet your talking about and the box should pull down, take the impellor housing off and voila one knackered impellor !
id stick to fordson majors if I was you mr A

The black cap on the side is just to gain access to the shift shaft coupler.

The tell tale on a malta is out through the exhaust relief half way up the back of the leg. It doesnt pump like a standard tell tale does, but more spits with exhaust gas. As long as there is a healthy spray from here youre good to go.
If no spray replace the impeller, or it could be a salted up block..

watch this video you can see it clearly,

it will probably be the water passages blocked with salt or the impeller. a word of advice, before you try these just find the tell tale hole and stab it with a straw of a wd40 can or something of a similar gauge and rigidity and give it a reaming (im sure reaming will make people laugh) as salt and grit deposit there and blocks the passage. does the head get hot quickly?

strange, I have a couple in the workshop and they have tell tales. it is just a hole in the upper casting bracket but it should flow water. in the video it has one as well. this is if we are talking about a 3hp malta.

Where is it? I had one here last week that wasnt pumping water, wasnt a tell tale on it. Theres a hole alright, right behind the handle, in the middle of the lower casing, but it goes nowhere!

Ok, so had a look at youtube as doubting myself now and true enough theyre pumping water from a tell tale. So appologies, youre right.

But the one here certainly didnt have any tell tale anywhere on it!

that's weird. that is where it should be. if you take off the powerhead you can see the cast passages that run right above it and should allow a steady flow out.

Yeah, had powerhead off to clean it out, but there wasnt any hole. This is a hole in the centre straight behind the handle. Put a piece of wire through it and it comes out under the cylinder head! There was no other hole in it.

was it defo a malta? sometimes people use Yamaha/mariner (before merc (Brunswick) owned mariner) head on them and the tell tale is supposed to come out the side on a long pipe but it gets blocked off. was it all original or do you think it could be a rebuild using whatsnots.

Haha, no defo all original. I'd say it was the first time head was even off! Original yam gaskets!
Just a weird one! Ran in test tank for near an hr so was certainly cooling.

I have just found this on another forum as seemed very strange both my customer have it and yours didn't.

'Depends on the model. Later models had a "tell tail" of water that exited in a continuous stream from under the rear of the power head. Earlier models (like mine) had a barely visible "stutter" from about half way down the leg--the bulk exiting through the exhaust. Best thing to do is fill a wheelie bin two thirds full with water and clamp the engine to the edge. Run in gear at around half to two thirds throttle for a goodly period of time and see if it overheats. Reccomendation is for a 100 to 1 two stroke mix which I personally think is a bit on the lean side.'

so both right yeh.

cool, the 2 in my workshop are 95 & 98 so being a 90 it would figure why yours doesn't have a tell tale. hydro what year was the one you worked on?

aye up guys

looking at the motor tonight there's a small hole under under the power head so put the air line on and the air came out of the pipe that goes to the pump so seems like it has a tell tail , just waiting for my new impeller now to come through the post and i am sorted, thanks again for all the advice.

You sure its not just the drain hole behind the handle?

This was bugging me, so checked another malta and it had a tell tale on the port side.

Yes fairly sure also put the air line on the pipe that comes from the pump and air comes out of small hole just behind the handle , will know for sure when I get it back together .
