Yanmar 6LP tacho problems??

A 6LP tacho has stopped working. the alternator has been removed and tested and found that the tacho signal was faulty so that was fixed and returned. after fitting that still no tacho?
Out the back of the tacho there is a 3 pin plug the orange wire is the signal wire but after pulling the plastic shroud of the loom cover found it to be a spade connector (female) but nothing in to it?? I pulled back more shroud and still no sign of another?
I ran a wire straight from that to the orange signal on the back of the tacho, still nothing.
the orange signal wire from the alt should read half of the voltage to what the engine is charging. which it is just. I took the alt and tacho to electrical engineer who ran them together and said both are good and work together.
question is the orange wire off the back of the alt should there be a male spade into that?
sorry if its confusing but its been annoying for me.

It dose not pick up of the taco. It's off a speed sensor in the bellhouseing from memory.

Depends if it's an original or an aftermarket tacho.
