Boat Safety Certificate

Guys,

I recently bought a Marshan/Mercury rig and through recommendation here on Boatmad, I insured through Euromarine.

Everything went fine. Payment was made and Policy was issued, however, I came home from work last night to a letter from Euromarine informing me that if they didn't get my Boat Safety Certificate soon, my policy would be restricted to 3rd Party Only.

I've done a quick search and can't find anything about such a certificate and of course Euromarine are only open on week days, so I can't phone.

Can anyone enlighten me on what is required of me.

I suspect they are referring to the “Boat Safety Scheme” which is run by Canal & River Trust and Environment Agency, which can be found at www.boatsafetyscheme.org

The scheme at the moment only applies to boats using inland waterways, however you can apply for an exemption certificate if your boat fits certain criteria. See www.canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/library/733.pdf

Whilst most boat owners on here are knowable about boat safety and maintain their boats to a high standard, but I have seen boats bought by newbie’s to boating that certainly aren’t safe and are not fit to be used on any waters, further more nor are they aware until it's pointed out to them or the inevitable happens.

Whilst this country is a rapidly changing place, I doubt it will be long before insurance company start insisting on insured boats having some sort of safety certificate or survey be it for Canal, river or Sea use which I suppose is not a bad thing.

May be this is the start of something new?

Hi Freddy,

My search for information also led me to the "Boat Safety Scheme," but I didn't look deeply enough into it to come across the exemption certificate. I will speak with the insurer on Monday and see exactly what it is they need from me.

Guys.....FYI

Euromarine sent the Boat Safety Cert' request in error. Turns out they wanted pics as proof of the value of my insured value for the rig.

I hope you don't have to claim, I did a few years ago and it was a very unpleasant experience.
