Immersion Testing

From January 2013, prior to immersion testing, restrained drivers will need to complete a Microdive RYA Basic diver course.

Following a recommendation earlier in the year that further scuba training and use of diving equipment and air systems be integrated
into annual Immersion testing for competitors racing in closed canopied boats and safety cells the Microdive RYA Basic Diver course
has been designed and is now mandatory for every competitor that requires immersion testing.

This course has been designed to teach individuals how to dive safely with open circuit scuba equipment to depths of 3 metres/10 feet,
so is mandated for those who race boats and are restrained in an enclosed safety cell.

The course will teach you how to use scuba type equipment correctly and is seen as an essential requirement for those using compressed
air within the safety cell in the event of an accident or should you require the rescue services to administer air underwater.

In the event of an accident you will better equipped to prolong the use of your air and have a better understanding of your equipment’s functionality.

The benefit of this course is that it teaches students to safely handle and use diving equipment on the surface and to a depth of up to 3 metres.
Students can then complete 2 supervised open water dives at a suitable dive centre at any time afterwards, this then qualifies them to dive globally
to a depth of 3 meters.

The mandatory course will take less than 1 hour of pool training

Microdive is an approved Health and Safety Qualification and includes accident and civil liability insurance through Divemaster.

According to the office, despite being a fully qualified PADI rescue diver I still need to do this course - I think some common sense needs to be applied here!

test

cookee, phoned jp on this subject and he told me that if you have taken a diving course then you only need the dunk part, the idea is for you to accustomise yourself with the equipment, not really a bad idea

And I have it in writing that it's compulsory:

Quote:
The Course is mandated as part of the Immersion test and will be mandatory for everyone
And:

Quote:
The Immersion test now has two parts to it the Microdive RYA Basic Diver Academic and in water skills section and the actual Immersion test
These will both be run together and the first will need to be done before the immersion test can be completed
I have written another email to see if I can get written confirmation that this isn't the case.

I have a PADI rescue diver qualification and the thought of paying someone £100 to have them teach me something I have been doing for at least 15 years is money grabbing lunacy!

I too have taken issue with the RYA on this point having been PADI qualified for over 20 years, completed Nitrox & deep dive certification this year and been a circuit racing/Records Week rescue diver several times over the past 5 years I find having to do a 'microdive' basic qualification to be of absolutely no benefit whatsoever... The notion of having to make qualified divers take this course, possibly annually for £100 is absurd...

Just what a seriously struggling sport needs; more onerous RYA regulations.

I love the smell of nails in coffins in the morning.

Brian, see comments from Cookee etc above... Even with recognised diving qualifications, and racing experience (including previous dunk tests), they are being told by the RYA PB Office that they still need to do this course!

Actually I have been exchanging Emails with the Powerboat Racing Senior Administrator. I have also spoken to "The Man at the Top" and he still can't confirm anything in writing as of Friday afternoon but is "Working on it".

Is it not an insult to the the guys above who are padi qualified to far greater degree ?
And then ask it to be carried out each year just to rub it in !!!

That's how I read it, and I'm padi qualified too.

As a non diver with no intention of strapping myself into a goldfish bowl to go racing. I think all those wishing to race canopied craft should do a full diving course before each race and an astronautical course annually.

That's easy to explain, dive clubs are helpful and have great communities around the diving
Boat racing seems to be full of bitching from what you read here

Entered into the May Torquay race and organised for my sponsor to pay for the crane but the race was cancelled, entered into RB12 - Cancelled, raced in CTC and finished second despite losing a blade off the prop, paid £1,000 towards Cowes Monte and we'll see how that goes, will be doing CTC this year and more depending on what happens with the Monte event - Happy?
