I always stick with garmin as there user friendly and ya get good after service even if its an old unit. I try to find a 182/192c but i think there discontinued now. There plotters but without all this 3d crap you get nowadays. Never tryed a touch screen but i personally wouldnt bother just for simplicity.

I've just been forced into buying a garmin 4008, HD radar, Depth sounder, Autopilot and 300AIS VHF as the thieving french transport company nicked my 298S that I was using as a temporary measure.

All plugs together so easily now it's unreal. Wanted to grab a 750 as a second screen but it won't network fully so you have to buy seperate charts for it.

Even got dedicated video input which I just need to pick up a camera for then decide whether to mount it on the arch so I can see the arse into the berth or the bedroom so I can just see the arse

Reading up on the latest stuff it seems that you can track stuff in realtime on the plotter using the dsc element of a radio and gps. Got to worth thinking about for the Marathon lads? May have been handy at Harwich to know what had happened to our leader.

Not sure about how they do that without the AIS?

John, my understanding is that it works through DSC polling not AIS.

So if I set my GPS up with each of your MMSI numbers and ask it to track it will continually send position requests to your radio set and assuming you accept the polling request I will get a DSC reply that includes your position data taken from the GPS and display that position on my set.

I can set mine up to track the whole phone book of MMSI numbers and assuming you have a DSC Polling capable VHF linked to your GPS you should be able to set yourself to automatically accept polling requests saving you the bother of stopping to see what the screen is beeping at you

Seems someone even does a bit of software to show it all on a puter so someone clever could add that into a widget to show up realtime on the web if they wanted.

http://www.digiboat.biz%2FDSC-VHF_Ship-to-Shore.pdf

So to get the system working you just need.

All Boats

DSC radio capable of accepting polling requests.

Automatic acceptance of polling requests.

A GPS linked to the Radio.

An MMSI number.

A race entry that includes your MMSI details before taking to the water.

I'd bet that you've all got that anyway with maybe the exception that you haven't registered your sets and if you haven't got it it's not a lot of money for something you are going to use anyway.

The final advantage is that you can talk direct to individuals and this would have been a boon at Harwich. We never had a single radio contact with race control as the frequency was being used by the inshore safety teams and was full for the entire race.

Our radio reception anyway was crap as we were some 30 miles off the base station with their antenna obstructed by the horizon / land / junk. My understanding of a DSC conversation is that the digital element not only allows better penetration of the signal but that the conversation is heard by only the 2 parties involved over channel 70 so not interfering with the race / safety channels.

Am also a Garmin fan but ... have had problems with the 5000 series plotter touchscreen. When rough, bangy and wet the screen goes stripy then all black and inoperable. When dries out a bit and given a wipe seems to carry on regardless until the next time.

Garman

Bought a garman 750s, nice unit, flush mount ,touch screen very easy to use and clear screen. It has very fast panning and reacts really well to quick touches.Installation is simple, but had and still having problem with a gfs fuel sensor network, the backbone system is still not working on mine.

Outside of this ,in rough offshore waters it has not skipped a beat,no problems with panning when soaked ,although hydrostream hit me with his rooster tail at about 80mph and it did pann slightly away from where we were.

If you do a search for "lily the pink lough derg" and forward to about 7min 50secs you will see what it took to make the Garman pan slightly off course!

Best of luck with it.

Jason

Jason, that might be worth a call to Garmin. When I was putting the system together for the Camargue I asked about the 750 and they said that it's truly networkable and won't share info properly as a network tool.

Seems a shame as they really are a tidy unit and as you say fast.

Thanks Motorvator ,your right I must contact Garmin and see if they can help ,not as though they dont know how to charge for it !!! I believe the fuel sensor works well once configured and set up.

Thanks

It's true that the call is made to the receiving MMSI number directly but the conversation takes place on a normal VHF channel. You choose a channel which is allocated for your call's purpose. Ch6 or 77 would be usual for ship to ship. From memory I think CH8 and 72 also. I wasn't aware that DSC improved the range or signal quality in some way.

On the gps issue, I find difficulty using a touch screen when bumping about. Even buttons are difficult and for this reason I've stayed with the Garmin 3000 series because a remote control handset is cheaply available. It's not quite up to the more recent units in some respects but it is modern enough to support two camera inputs, anti-reflective screen, AIS input, DSC position input, 3D charts, split purpose screens etc. It also allows one to be strapped into a seat and out of reach of the plotter but still operate it with ease.

Definitely the best I have used for racing (182/192C)...I dont think I could use a touch screen at speed in a race....

Marathon is a different kettle of fish......Gordon's set up is pretty good.
