17 November 2007 - BASIC RACE

On the 17th November 2007 we are organising a basic race.

It is going to be held as an annual 'end of season' event, but this year we are limiting entries to 20 boats, so that we can control things easier.

New boats & crew are welcome and will be given all assistance. This is a basic event, and event licences can be bought on the day.

Entry fee is £90 including the lift in and out and the hard standing for the weekend at drivers dry berthing. Negotiable discount for those who do not require launching.

The event will take place from Drivers Dry Berthing in Southampton and will be an 'around the island' race. The advanced notice will be placed on the V24Club.com , Boatmad.com and dryberthing.com websites.

On Friday the 16th November there will be a training session for those who have not raced before, or those who are unsure of what to do, and would like a refresher.

Fiona Pascoe has already advised me about this one. Boats already at Drivers but if I can get hold of an engine in time then I will enter.

Hi Safety.

My thinking in setting up the event was the following:

1) It does not compete with any other event.
2) It is at the end of the season, so you have 6 months to sort out any issues from the event - you can enter without fear that damage will harm your chances in any championship events in the near future.
3) It is a week after Conniston, so many boats will still be race ready.
4) It should be a good event for a newbie who was thinking of racing in 2008 to get a go in preperation for the next season.
5) It will be a fun event, without the pressures of a 'real race' and a good afterparty.
6) Partnering with Drivers Dry Berthing, we have access to many other people who would do a poker run, but never thought of doing a real race. Hopefully we can encorage one or two of them to enter.
7) We have set the entry fee at a very reasonable level, so people dont think they are being ripped off.
8) The event raises money for our nominated charity as well as for the RNLI.

Even if there is only one entry, the event will run, and the RNLI will get IRO £300 and our nominated charity will get IRO £50, just from one boat running.

So there is no loss in running the event - even for just one boat.

I think you'll find that a lot of the people who do poker runs, do so because they're pissed of with racing!

what about us without GPS etc, what about something like brass monkey or exmouth? a few of the ski racers would be up for it

We can take up to 1.3L next weekend at Chasewater and again 10/11 of Nov in Poole.......

Hi,

I went out yesterday to a friends house in Reading, and woke up late after quite a long night! First I fed the chickens and the quail, fed myself, then I watched the footie review on TV ( well done Scotland by the way! ), then I went to logon to boatmad. Priorities were in that approximate order. There was no intention to avoid any questions on the event.

As you know ( because you were copied on the Email sent out from the RYA by Sheila, and on the replies by Fiona and Jan ) there is a recommendation that - as this was not a calendered event ( it was not taken into consideration when the fees were decided at the begining of the year) and that four of the clubs are recommending it be done as cheap as possible, there is a recommendation to the RYA that there be no calender fee for this event this year. This also falls into the thoughts expressed by John Puddifoot at the meeting you attended on the 25th July at the RYA that some BASIC races would be encoraged by offering them fee free.

However, I am told that the RYA is saying that there was a shortfall in the money raised from calendered events, as some were cancelled, and that I should pay the correct fee of £180. This will be clarified on Monday when I must submit the fee and the other documentation required.

If it is important to you I will post this information immediately that I have it.

Regarding the Advanced Notice and the entry forms, these will be avalable on the V24Club website, Drivers Dry Berthing website and probably on Boatmad. This should have been avalable now, but will probably only be ready on Tuesday, due to some delays in getting the safety and course approved.

Technically, you can do offshore racing without a GPS!!!
Back in the bad old days they used to do a thing called 'NAVIGATION'

You can do it with a compass and a stopwatch and some planning.
I can show you how.

OR - I can loan you a GPS!

( Also - around the island is one of the nicer events to do without a GPS. )

Entry form and advance instructions hopefully Tuesday!

Just a reminder - this is a basic race, you dont need a national licence, you can buy an event licence from the RYA on the day!

And thanks to JF and the poker runs allowing Drivers to practice getting things right, the after event entertainment should be good! ( lets just hope Gareth does not play..

)
