Cowes used to be great, especially around the island...

But that is unlikely to happen, and again we 'lesser mortals' will be relegated to support acts for the great P1 Show. Last years fun things included not being able to use both cranes to launch, as one was reserver for P1 use despite no P1 boats being recovered, and another is being delayed to launch the boats for the scheduled National Race because some P1 boats wanted in the water - Not to race or practice, just to tie up! And they got their launch in first - as directed by the marshals.

If there is any chance of pulling the Nationals from Cowes, please lets do so! We can re-organise Cowes again for later in the year when we are able to do an around the island race!

I agree, we had a similar experience. I have personally never liked the venue for several reasons and would welcome it being removed from the calendar.

Well, I know as fact others were unhappy, so why not try and get it removed? Perhaps then in future years we may get looked after a bit better?

I am keen to progress this - I will talk to the RYA and see what their advice is on the matter.

You can count us in as well. It costs more to race in Cowes than to go to Italy!!!!!

The RYA advice is to talk to the driver associations for the class, and put forward a plan of action.

I think this will become a reality if we work on this now.

I would still like someone to explain to me what we got extra to justify the highest entry fee of the season. We still only had one crane, two races etc. There was no function, the prizegiving was an afterthought for the first race and if memory serves me correctly there was no bubbly for the 2ltr winners on day 1. I really hope they do drop it from the 2ltr calendar.

With reference to Cowes, totally agree drop it and take it to Torquay or somewhere. Plus the 2litre crew had no bubbly and the medals were something out of a Kinder Egg. No effort was made towards or for the 2litre crews.
This is my personal opinion nothing meant by it

When Jon and I were racing at Cowes in Production/Touring, I used to negotiate our own reduced entry fees by threatening to have the class boycott the event enmasse.

Tim Powell always used to dig his heels in at first, but rolled over like a big pussy cat in the end.

Still used to hate the place though. Never really felt wanted by them, just our cash. Prize giving always tended to be a bit of a joke as well, we were given a class 1 trophy for winning one year, and the greatest insult was a concours award! despite the empty coke cans and leaves etc in the boat!

Didn't like Torquay either though, and the bloody awful parties in the tacky old yacht club.

Spose I'm a bit of a miserable old git really!

Guys as an outsider looking in why not give the race event to an organisation/sponsor that wants to promote the sport at a local level. I know from experience that local councils look at how many people the event will bring to the area is a big factor, we are not talking big figures here if it brings people through eating houses, b&bs it a big . Why pander to an event that basically considers you a fly in the ointment, not even bubbly for a class win sucks.

We could still do an Around the Island event - based at Gosport or some similar location! Also not smack bank in the middle of Cowes week when the Round The Island will be banned due to the Sailing fleet..

There always used to be a RTI race run out of Ocean Village by I think, the Royal Southampton Yacht Club, but Tony Hamilton upset them one year, and we've never been back.

Was a good event, run at the end of the season. Started and finished at the top of Southampton Water, adjacent to the Sylos at the mouth of the Itchen.
We won 'overall honours' in '95 in really snotty conditions (RTI was cancelled in favour of multi Solent laps due to the weather) when the class II canopied stuff, and cats couldn't get on top of it, or see anything. Even got a mention at the winter Powerboaters ball for it.

happy days.
