Cork-Fastnet-Cork Offshore Powerboat Race 2011

All,
just to show we have no sense at all and have decided to run another event we are announcing the possibility of a new race for the 2011 season and beyond today.

The Fastnet Rock is obviously very well known, Cork Harbour and The Royal Cork Yacht Club as the oldest Yacht Club in the world are obviously well known, and the fact that the Harmsworth Cup was first run in Cork Harbour in 1903 which may not be so well known, we felt we needed an annual race that would form part of the Marthon series each year.

We are hoping to run the race and mini festival during the weekend of June the 3rd-6th with racing taking place on the 4th.

The Cork-Fastnet-Cork run is a stunning Offshore route with most of the race being close to shore with plenty to see. The race will be about 170nm and will be open to all Marathon Classes under UIM regulations.

This is still in the development stage and will need final approval from the Port Of Cork. The UIM, The ISA & The RYA have all agreed it would be great to have a race here and agreement has been reached.

It is my hope that we can encourage as many racers over from the UK for this weekend. Costs will be kept to a minimum and entry fees will reflect this.

Cork is easily accessible either via a short blast across the channel in your boat, or via the Fastnet Ferry Line to Cork.

I would welcome some feedback and any help we can get at this early stage.

It will help you all hone your Offshore skills for Cowes, and of course for RB12 and Cowes-Monte Carlo in 2013.

Let us know if your are interested please so we can judge the interest in hosting such an event.

Regards,

Justin Mc Inerney
The Irish Offshore Powerboat Racing Club.

cork fastnet race

Been there, done it.
I tell you it needs a seaworthy craft, no matter whether its inflatable from outer tubes or inner buoyancy, but unsinkable would be nice!
When we did the Round Ireland this year it was the most impressive leg down there.
Speeds varied between 80 and 18knots or less occasionally. It took 7hrs 21 minutes for first ship home after 220 miles between Waterford and Fenit.
That was why it is called Offshore originally.

Recommend certain teams to install snorkels and periscopes plus oxygen tanks for their Steyrs.

I' ll spent the trophy for the first foreign boat to arrive.
Now lets see if English is foreign to Irish in wikipedia, oh difficult story!?
So, lets go for first rigid boat instead, thats more political correct.

But what if we win it??

No good either...

So Justin, I will spent a trophy and we will sort out what for, after a couple of Guinness, OK?

I think we could be up for this as long as Guinness drinking is compulsory!

Race Thoughts

We are currently working through the fine details of the proposed race this summer and hope to be in a position to confirm the details shortly.

It has been proposed at UIM level and with the support of both the RYA & the ISA to have this new race included as part of the Marathon Series each year.
The idea being that we spread the message about Offshore racing a little further.

We are proposing that the race be run over the weekend from the 3rd-5th of June which is a bank holiday in Ireland and should allow a higher degree of flexibility.

Entry fees will be in line with other Marathon events but will be kept to a miimum to cover basic event costs such as race insurance etc. (The Guinness will probably cost more)

We have set up a dedicated Facebook page at www.facebook.com/irishoffshore where we will post everything we have about the race, the location, getting there etc.

If possible it would be very helpful if you could signal your interest on the Event calendar there so we can judge who and what is coming.

We will continue to post on the forum on this thread and if you have any other communication ideas please let us know.

The race will be from Cobh in Cork, out the harbour, right at the Cork Bouy, Around the Fastnet and back.
Not too complicated and long enough to rattle a few bolts loose, but real simple.

It is hoped we can encourage a few UK and European boats over for the weekend and we will do everything we can to assist you all in getting there.

Please feel free to contact me at justin.mcinerney@aroundireland.org

Regards,

Justin.

Course Map Cork-Fastnet-Cork

All,
we have just posted a simple map online to give an idea of the course for next years race. http://tinyurl.com/29tsfgg

This far from the finished article and will be issued correctly along with the rules in the next few weeks.

Race dates are yet to be finalised as we are working to slot in with the RYA Offshore Calendar but suggested is the 24th-26th June 2011 so as not to conflict with Torquay or Cowes.

The basics for the race are shping up and we hope to have the full race program completed in the next few weeks.

Regards,

Macrib.

No there will be a new boat. Can't say what yet, but have something in the pipeline if things all go to plan. I will text you what's lined up.

Would be great for a big catch up. Yes I think a check in to your hotel will be on the cards

Race now Marathon Status

All,
some more updates.

The Cork-Fastnet-Cork Marathon Offshore Powerboat Race 2011 is now formally in the calendar for the weekend of the 24th-26th of June 2011.

The race has been granted Marathon Series status by the RYA and ISA and will form part of the 2011 Marathon Series of Races in 2011.

The race will run under the UIM Ordinary International Status and is thus open to all competitors from across the globe who will receive a fantastic Irish welcome on their arrival in Cork. The race is also being run as an official UIM cross border event for the 2011 season.

We are working hard on the details and will publish race rules, courses, classes and details in time for Christmas.

More when available.

Justin Mc Inerney.

International Entry Fees waived. Marathon Series.

Race Update.

The course notes, charts, and race rules are nearing completion and should be live on the website in the next 10 days assuming we get it all completed in time.

We are negotiating with the usual Ferry Companies, Hotels etc to arrange special competitor discounts and will post as soon as we have something to work on.

All International Competitor Entry Fees will be waived for the event barring a booking deposit of £150 which will go towards booking costs and the Dinner & Reception on the Saturday night.

It is most important therefore that we start to get a real feel for potential entires from the International Community to provide the Ferries with relevant information.
If possible can you email me at justin.mcinerney@aroundireland.org and let me know what and how many you may wish to bring.
Costs are being kept to the minimum, but a great Irish reception will be available to all.

I look forward to hearing from you all.

Regards,
Justin.

Cork Fastnet Cork 2011 Non Starter

All,
it is with regret that we inform you we will be postponing the Cork Fastnet Cork Race in 2011.

We had originally hoped to host a small event as a launchpad for future more substantial events. This has proved difficult and commitment has been poor.
The sensible thing we believe is to look to 2012 and with a little more time available we hope to host an really memorable event in Cork in advance of the RB12 Race in July.

We are painfully aware that commitment to so many events in the UK & Ireland is very difficult for Racers everywhere. The motivation for International competitors to travel needs something really special for people to consider travelling during these difficult economic times. We promise you that we will ensure this in 2012. We will keep you posted.

We will host a smaller event in Cork in 2011 on the weekend of the 24th of June to include an Open Class race, P750 and the Cork Fastnet Cork run for fun if anyone wishes to join us.

We will als be working to attend a few of the UK races in 2011 with Cowes and the RMYC being high on our list.

We will keep you posted.

Regards,

Justin Mc Inerney.

Will you be publishing more details on here? We were intending to come over for the event and still may if we won't be on our own!
