Cowes 2010 update
Some general information regarding the racing at Cowes next year.
UIM Marathon Series World Cup.
August 27th 10.30 am Heat 1 "The Cowes 100"
August 29th 10.30 am Heat 2 "The Cowes Torquay Cowes"
Points will be awarded in the usual UIM format ie. 1st 400 2nd 300 etc.
Subject to permissions from Harbour Masters etc. we expect the races to start and finish from the Royal Yacht Squadron line.
Although the UIM have allowed multi hulls into their international Marathon rules, the BPRC have informed the RYA that this event will be for mono hulls only - the RYA have told the BPRC that is their choice as the hosting club.
Cowes Poole Cowes Races
ORDA have again been invited to hold V24 and Class 3 racing at Cowes - The BPRC awaits the ORDA AGM for their decision.
The CPC basic race can only run if a) ORDA put Cowes on their calendar b) If the organisers have enough basic entries to merit a "stand alone" race. (It appears that the boats placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in this years basic CPC race wished that they had raced the CTC!).
Officials
Rob Andrews will be OOD for the event, Sally Windsor race secretary and Amanda Raby will once again look after safety.
Racing Instructions
Racing Instructions will be posted on the BPRC web site in early spring next year and also snail mailed to known Marathon competitors.

Former powerboat stars to make a splash in Bay
Friday, December 11, 2009, 09:10
A SPECTACULAR array of seafaring superstars from yesteryear will be on show in Tor Bay next year.
More than 30 former race boats will be here for celebrations marking 50 years since the first Cowes-Torquay-Cowes competition.
They are coming to South Devon for three days in August before the milestone contest takes place, with an array of 21st century powerboats roaring across Tor Bay.
The historic boats' arrival on August 25, four days before the main race, will be marked by a visit from the Red Arrows, whose daredevil pilots will put on a display over Torquay from 6pm.
Organisers are hoping to have a special reception in the Royal Torbay Yacht Club's harbourside marquee and a gala dinner at the Imperial Hotel the following day.
Gordon Oliver, Torbay Hospitality Association chairman, has linked up with the Classic Offshore Powerboat Owners Club to help arrange events.
He said: "This race is the most famous powerboat event in the world and the most challenging.
"It attracts competitors from around the globe, all fighting for the prestigious Beaverbrook Trophy.
"It's given Torbay decades of publicity, and for next year's anniversary we want to arrange other maritime events to make the week really fun.
"All the classic boats have fascinating stories to tell, having competed in races around the world."
The historic fleet's headline boat will be inaugural race winner Thunderbolt, formerly driven by renowned ex-Jaguar sports car racer Tommy Sopwith, son of aviation pioneer Sir Thomas Sopwith.
Thunderbolt is now owned by Mike James, Commodore of the Classic Offshore Powerboat Owners Club.
He has spent thousands of pounds restoring Thunderbolt in time for next year's 50th anniversary celebrations.
Mike said: "Tommy Sopwith won the Cowes-Torquay three times, and 1963 was the last time Thunderbolt was in Torbay.
"A couple of years ago I saw in a magazine article that Don Shead, the famous designer and racer, had Thunderbolt in his garden.
"I contacted him and ended up going to see him, and the boat was in terrible shape.
"I asked how much he'd want for her, and he said that if I restored her and looked after her she was mine.
"I fell in love with boats as a boy, and as a family we used to go to Torbay to see 'the race', as we called the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes, so to get the first winner of the race knocked me out.
"In 2006-2007 everything was stripped on Thunderbolt, and in February she's having new engines fitted. By May she'll be in virtually A1 condition.
"Everyone's getting excited about the 50th anniversary celebrations. It'll be a great sight, having all those classic boats together.
"They'll be on display for the public so people can enjoy them and hear all about the race's history."
Powerboats competing in the 50th running of the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes offshore race, organised by the British Powerboat Racing Club, will be in Tor bay on August 29th

The Harmsworth Trophy
The BPRC are delighted to announce that The British International Harmsworth Trophy will be competed for at The British Powerboat Festival 2010 to be held at Cowes from August 25th.
The 2010 winner of the Harmsworth Trophy will have competed in the UIM BPRC Marathon World Cup and completed the Cowes 100 & The Cowes Torquay Cowes courses with the fastest average speeds.
The Trophy was commissioned by Sir Alfred Harmsworth, presented first in 1903, and has had a rich history of competitors and winners.
The Earl of Normanton, Chairman of the Trustees of The Harmsworth Trophy, said from his home Somerley, in Hampshire: "Here is a quote from a London newspaper in 1904. 'Had any shipbuilder been asked, say five years ago, to build a 40' launch capable of running at 20 knots and upwards he would have declared the problem an impossible one. Yet this has already been accomplished and makers are looking to even better results with improved body design and methods of construction.' This quote probably delighted Sir Alfred Harmsworth because it was for this very reason that he commissioned and donated this famous trophy to the sport. There is no doubt that over the last 100 years or so of racing, the British International Harmsworth Trophy has achieved its goal with the development of the Motor Torpedo Boat used in the war being designed as a direct result of racing for this prize.
The 2010 UIM Marathon Boats will be racing in monohulls, capable of speeds in excess of 100mph in rough water conditions. Today, the fastest speed ever achieved on water is an astonishing 317mph by Australian Ken Warby. We've come a long way on water since the first race in 1903."

What fantastic news, this is one of the greatest and most prestigious trophies in our sport and one that everyone wants to win.
This should bring out a few of the Old Guard at Cowes who have won it in the past.
