Cowes Event 2008

Hi All

After a meeting today concerning the Cowes Event, the following was agreed on:

There will be three races held on the Saturday 23rd August.

(1)Cowes Torquay Cowes - non-stop &
(2)Cowes Torquay re-fuel back to Cowes

There will be the Cowes Torquay Cowes Race. You will have two choices. You can either run the Cowes Torquay Cowes non-stop or you can run Cowes Torquay, stop and re-fuel at Torquay, then race back to Cowes. These are effectively two different races.

V24s will be entitled to enter either of the above races. However, like all competing boats in the above races, you will be required to carry a life raft and EPIRBs. This is in addition to your normal class rule requirements for racing. However you will be allowed to run single engine boats.

(3) Basic Race
There will also be a Basic Race on Saturday 23rd August starting approximately 20 minutes after the Cowes Torquay Race. This race will run from Cowes to Purbrook back to Cowes non-stop. This course is approximately 55 miles long. This race will run under basic race rules as stated in PB1. The minimum boat length for the basic race is 18ft. So it gives everybody the opportunity to come out and Race at the Cowes Event.

The licence requirements for the Basic Race will be a minimum of an Event Licence for each riding crew. These can be purchased from Race Control, on the day. However you will need to enter in advance.

V24s can race in the basic race or the Cowes Torquay - the choice is yours. As stated above, if you race the Cowes Torquay you must carry the safety equipment stated above, in addition to your normal equipment.

I have done my best to ensure that as many boats as possible qualify for this very special race weekend. The entry fee for the Basic, for those who I know are going to ask, is £275.00. The entry fees for the Cowes Torquay are as stated on the P1 website.

The entry fees for each team for all races will include the Race Party, which will have live music and will be staged on Saturday night. I hope this clears up the confusion and helps.

Just to make it really clear - if you have an 18ft boat that will pass scrutineering and is equipped to the PB1 standard for a basic race - you can enter.

If you have a V24 you can enter.

If you have a Cat, you can enter.

In fact as long as your boat conforms to the minimum length of 18ft, you can enter the basic race on the Saturday - but just remember one thing - the crash helmets you wear must be orange.

I look foward to seeing you ALL at Cowes.

Kind regards
Gary Manchester

Are we all happy now

All they got to do now is drop the Class 2 entry fee to £600 and i'l be happy.

Out of interest what do you get extra for the increase in entry fees for Class 1 and 2. Do you get more space in the dry pit area or more food and wine at the party

The financial side of this Event is down to the Event organisers. All I have done is try to make it as accessible as possible for as many boats as possible to race at Cowes.

As for the food side - my advice would be to make sure you are very hungry - which you will be after the Race!

What are the licence requirements for the CTC?

Will the International licence we have from Round Britain cover us for this?

Hi John

Yes, your international licence will cover you to race in the Cowes Torquay Cowes. As would a national licence. But the minimum requirements for the licences for the Basic Race will be an Event Licence. Obviously for any crews racing in canopied boats they must have a valid dunk test.

I think that covers it, but if it doesn't let me know and I will try and answer any questions.

Kind regards
Gary.

Yes, I realised 'an' international licence would do it, but wasn;'t sure if the RB licence was 'one event only' special.

Good news indeed.

Are you saying we can use the licences we had for RB8 for CTC if so the organisers kept the licence at the beginning of the event

Your licence is an International Race Licence.

You can drive / navigate anywhere in the world with it. (for this year)

As Barry says, the licences were retained by race control, so we need to break into RYA house a nick em back.

Hi Gary - Is the Cowes-Torquay ( refuel ) - Cowes considered a basic race as originally published? So we could get an event licence for this race? Or what is the minimum licence requirement for this race?

We have a four man liferaft already. How will we know if this is an acceptable liferaft? We will hire an EPIRB for the event. Just to ensure that there are no last minute issues with the equipment, is there a list of the equipment required, and the minimum standard that the equipment must meet? I guess this is quite important, as I would hate to get the wrong thing. Where can we get this information from?

We got our dunk tests done in April with Bob, so we are fine on that score.

However I think it is a very important safety issue that the dunk test certificates issued by Andark are not accepted at face value, but are checked by the RYA, as many of these certificates are avalable for anyone who wishes to have one - without actually having done the dunk test.

Finally - (not that it is important) but why did they split the cowes-torquay-cowes race from the cowes-torquay-refuel-cowes race? Just interested, not complaining!
