Actually - it would be nice to hear *anything* from the organisers. Last year there was a complete cock up with the entries. Any idea when we will get race instructions?

how bad has it got? Are the organisers desperately short of safety staff OR just a few??

I believe that the HM was quite determined that the bank holiday weekend was not the time to do the race!!!
Lets make the best of it. Not quite so good for racers but perhaps better for the spectators?

I know, you would like a little jaunt round the bay sat next to a steady old man that just potters along in a slow old Phantom. It can be arranged.

Totally agree Scotty. It is the only form of racing I know where you do not need to take the chequered flag to be awarded points. They do not have that in the UIM races so why should that be the case in the Nationals?

in V24, running under UIM rules, you *only* have to pass the start /finish line to gain last place points!
So you can gain those points with the run from muster to the first bouy!

Is the problem getting enough safety cover around the whole island as the water is likely to be busy?
Can they only get the safety boat numbers to cover the solent?
Cowes wouldn't be the same without going round the island, thought people came for the challenging variety of waters!?
Will phone organisers tomorrow to try and get some info on whats going on as the programme no longer shows the Island Challenge but the entry form does?

Must admit, the round island does seem to generate a lot of interest & would be a shame should it be changed to a non-round island course.
is it simply not enough safety boats?

I think that is the case for our orda championship but not for our national if i remember rightly?
Still agree with ian and think something should be done about the 70% rule! Who do we write to or Bring it up with to try and do something about it?
Its the only form of racing that i know of with a rule like this?

Who knows?
Perhaps they could send the basic boats to Poole and back - would be more interesting than a western Solent race and a lot of saftey cover could double up then.

Spoke to organisers in London where entry forms were sent to and despite 60 safety boats being confirmed the Island Harbour Comission said they will not go ahead with the Round the Island Challenge and there won't be any race to replace it; not even a small circuit race in the solent.
This means we won't beracing despite already having spent huge amounts of time and money in preperation for the race.
I suggest all the boats who will not be racing as a result of this get out in the solent over the bank holiday weekend on an informal kind of "cruise" and piss them off as they cannot stop us going out in our own boats for "pleasure boating".

Actually, they can. Eastern Solent is QHM, Western Solent is Southampton VTS.
They can't stop you cruising outside of their respective harbours, but they can stop, or control the manner of you cruising in them.
That's why I wasn't able to bring simons boat back to drivers on saturday, southampton VTS were VERY keen we took them back to hamble.

Not true - my information says there is still a basic race - now on the Sunday at 10:45. This will be a Western Solent race.

I concur with Adam. My understanding is that there will still be a race, but that the format of it will be revised.
After the madness on the finish last year with yachties crossing the racing line to get into and out of cowes, it's easy to understand the need for a revised format.
I would recommend not jumping to any conclusions and waiting to see what transpires.
