Thats why its on Friday, I suppose it will be a little quieter, traffic wise across the Medina entrance.
It's all weather dependant really. I've raced round the Island 9 times and you do'nt often see too many safety boats round the back. (with the notable exception of Neil Jackson when he was involved. A welcome sight when its a bit rough.)

I have a feeling that one year my dad (Ben) sat around the back, and it wasn't the most fun thing to do. That said, I am sure he broke down there a couple of times, or split one of the Velocitys (maybe with Mike Sweeting?) round there and had to be towed in...its a long way back round.....
Totally understand that the traffic will be heavier on the Sunday, just a shame. At least this year they are actually having the race. Going to have to get a very early train from London to make it down!

I've attempted the RTI on 6 occasions and actually got around 3 times. Made it both times with Mike Sweeting on the 26 Velocity and one on Mr. Noisy. Broke down once with Noisy near St Catherine's point and it was a long slow trip back on one engine. Also retired once when I was a passenger in Absolutely Fabulous.
We split the hull from the deck of our original V26 in Guernsey in 92.

I'll have you know we had the distinction of being DQ'd twice over in one race.
Made it sort of interesting that I was on the race jury that year and had to adjudicate all the other boats that were DQ'd for doing precisely the same thing that we did!

Re the IOW Challenge (Basic) Race - I'm sure Dave S. has got it right - By having that on Friday, QHM allows the race, when yachties are not so numerous.
Picking up others points re marshall boats - Why not race basic on Friday, & marshall over the weekend ? It sounds better in some ways, you race first, so no risk of boat being damaged/mechanical probs before the race, while marshalling.
I think that with the amount of (non-race) boats on Solent over BH weekend, we're lucky to get RTI race that weekend now, at all, with Cowes HM & QHM involved.
o8.45 on Sunday for Class 3/c & V24 is pushing the envelope though !

So did I. I know the rya are trying to get a better deal for 3c, but nothing has been said yet. The problem is that if we dont all stick together and mean it, we will continue to sha* on by all and sundery. Our boat will be ready but we aren't attending the event.

Those who are definately *not* attending had better let let the organisers/RYA/ORDA know, as they are probably negotiating a better deal based on assumed numbers.
I dont think the organisers or the RYA will be too happy having negotiated a special deal and have three boats turn up. That is just poor show.

You say that trickey but there have been no advance or race instructions issued so who do we tell? There is not one organising club for the event, but anyone who can be roped in. ORDA has nothing to do with this event.

I will be doing safety at Cowes - If I can find two gear shifters for the Bladerunner.
I will also be doing around the island on Friday, with Geoff using the Bladerunner as safety.
So - thats one.
I believe that ORDA was involved in the negotiation with the RYA to organise a special deal with P1 so that Class 3 could race. If it is not the intention of anyone from C3 to go - no matter what the outcome of the deal - then it would be better to advise upfront, no point in winning a concession that is not going to be used.
You can advise ORDA or you can advise the RYA.

I've missed too many deadlines to make racing a possibility so will try and make it to marshal.
