Cowes - Safety and Marshall

... boats needed!

See below:

With the Cowes Grand Prix of the Sea a little over a month away we are looking for Marshalls and Officials to assist with the running of the event. The event will take place over the course of the August Bank Holiday weekend with a Round the Island Race running on the Friday. We already have many people involved but are still looking for Marshall Boats for all three days and a number of officials to ensure a professionally run event.

A full and detailed risk assessment has been prepared by P1 and the RYA which includes a comprehensive marshal plan which has been accepted by QHM, ABP and Cowes HM. The course has been agreed and the timetable finalised subject to final approval of the race approvals committee. As a direct result of this being completed well in advance of the event permission has been granted to run the Round the Island race on the Friday. This weekend remains the flagship powerboat racing event of the year and with more than 40 jet bikes assisting in the marshalling work and all buoy laying being carried out by commercial contractors together with two dedicated commercial tow boats being deployed we are confident that the organisation for 2007 will reflect the status of the event.

If you are interested in getting involved as a marshall boat or official during the event please contact the office (RYA)

All safety and marshal boats for the event will be eligible for the following:
  • Free moorings in Cowes
  • Fuel allowance paid for by the organisers. Money to be held by the RYA and payments to be made by us to all eligible boats
  • Access to parties on Saturday and Sunday night with live bands
  • FOC Ferry travel from the mainland Camping facilities at Northwood House
  • Free event promotional clothing

From what I understand, that might necessarily be the case. There is (or was as of last Wednesday) to be a RYA ORC meeting to determine who will be doing what at the event.

My question - why living 3,500 miles away and unable to make it to Cowes this year do I still feel so involved? Answers on a card please.

Excellent! (and I guess you're right).

Also my previous post should have read "might not necessarily be the case."

I note the request for officials for Cowes Powerboating.
I am unable to attend, due to me being a doom and gloom has-been.

My understanding is that UKOBA are NOT now the "organising club"
The RYA seem to be co-ordinating the marshalling etc.
It will, in effect, be an "all clubs" event, as far as the "on land" arrangements are concerned, but, as has always been the case, the BPRC are the title-owners of the event, & therefore, the successors to the Cowes Offshore Committee, which was TP's organising body, when he ran the event.
Any support that can be offered will be very much appreciated, both for marshalling, on & off - water, & assistance with race HQ officials, etc..

HI.

Is there no Basic Race on the Sunday? I see that there is the "Isle of Wight Challenge" on the Friday, which I take to be the round the island, but nothing on the Sunday?

Maybe this is wrong, but I would have thought there would have been a Basic on the Sunday, when the most spectators are watching, and not only get to see the P1s and other classes, but also the people who race "just for fun" and the only time that they normally do this is in Cowes?

Oh well, look forward to knowing. IF there is not one, I may have to speak to Rupert about us actually coming, the Basic is the most fun bit!

Sorry, once again just noticed how full the schedule is. At least the Round the Island is back, and the P1s and other classes should be exciting!

I'm guessing but last year the HM cancelled the event as he felt it was too dangerous to run on a Bank Holiday due to the yachts having the right of way

This time its actually me (not amanda!!).

Does anyone else thing that they're not helping themselves out with safety by not having a Basic race on sunday - for the last two years it seems that most of the basic race boats go out and help with the marshalling over the weekend and then have their race on sunday afternoon - surely this would encourage a few more boats out to help with the marshalling?? Especially with all those yachties out there the more safety boats the better.
