David's Round Britain Diary
During the Round Britain Race, Powerboat racing 'stalwart' David Graham-Smith shot a load of interviews, marina shots, and general racing bits n bobs on a video camera kindly loaned for the event by Panasonic, some from a helicopter.
I've put together an edit of some of this vast collection of footage.
I've included some of Davids' legendary letching, and outrageous comments, as I think they add value. (for the record, 50% of the raw footage is tits, bums, legs and not so subtle innuendo! , quite outstanding )
The full quality version is far to big for internet use (2.8 gig), so I've done a heavily compressed (file wise) version for the web (161 meg). Quality suffers quite a bit, but it's watchable.
39 mins duration. www.boatmad.com/vids/RB1small.wmv

Well done David for the film and Jon for the edit. It was really great to see the boats and hear the voices of all those that took part in the event again.
For me the last leg was one of the most amazing things I've ever done and to see the start raised the hairs on the back of my neck. Shame there was no footage of us running into Portsmouth or against '33' off Dover but hopefully there will be in the DVD.
Cheers
Mark

Gale force 10 winds. forcast 9 metre swells. We'd have been ok, but the ribs would have suffered, so it was canned.
Lovely quote from the 'Davids' Diary' video In Bangor, Northern Ireland Ireland @ 23:19 in:
"Jon Fuller's here now, he's just come in 3rd, behind two of the ribs, It was definitely a rib day today, as it was so flat!"
Laughing Out Fkkn Loud!!!!!
Most teams had trailers and support crews following them round, those that didn't had to think fast. A couple went round by water early the following morning when it was flat calm, but they then had to do two legs in one day. (Plymouth to Bangor, about 400 miles).

i had no idea the logistics that were involved IE support teams etc

Great vid - well done
At about 5:15 mins, the video captures Fabio Buzzi's engine/gearbox failure on the first leg. Steam comes out of the engine bay and fills the cockpit, then the boat comes to an abrupt halt.

Jon has stolen our thunder but he has done a great job cracking open the Panasonic film so that we could see it. I really wanted to make this into a second film because although we wanted to add some of the best bits into the main film it would have made it too long. It's already about 1hr 45 mins as it is so we have two films for viewing on the 18th plus the Cowes Torquay Cowes hopefully. Should be a good day. All are welcome now.
Just a quick comment, you all know we hardly had any sponsorship and therefore had to make do with just one camerman in the helicopter all the way round but he was very good and got some fantastic footage. Most of the film companies I had talked to were going to run three crews to do the job properly but we had to make do with one man plus David of course. Even so the main RB08 film is not bad and has been really made as a record for the racers, after all they paid for the race so that has been our thinking all along. Because Iain May is away filming for Top Gear so much it has been difficult to say the least to get the film to where it is today. We shall have Nick Knowles doing the voice over next week and should finish the film by Thursday two days before showing. This means that unfortunatley we can't get the DVD's out to those who have paid for them until week beginning 20th so please be patient until then. It will be worth it I promise you.
Note to Mark Wildey, we picked you up at Beachy Head and filmed you and boat 33 racing all the way home and across the line and that's on the main film!!

I would be interested in a DVD of all of David's stuff as the edit was brilliant and I'd love to see all of his recording. Any chance, Jon?
