No, it the UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique) which is the worldwide governing body for powerboat racing. They have a method of measuring a boats length, basically, from the bottom of the transom/running surface, to the bow (this is a simplified description) so it usually ends up giving a measurement shorter than that considered as the 'Length overall' figure.

I've a gut feeling that the single engine issue could end up with them being allowed for now (along with non epa OBs) for say another 3 years, after which time, you have to conform tothe new rules.

You also have to remember that we're trying to establish rules for international use for all Marathon racing, and that what ends up running localy (UK) could easily be more friendly to the older existing craft/engine setups. However, you simply cannot set up rules for international racing, for use over the coming years, based on a load of old pleasure boats from one particular country, to please 'a few' people.
All very fair points Jon. I'm certainly not looking at this purely for myself as the way the development industry is at the moment there might be little spare cash next year anyway. Its all about building the potential fleet isn't it, and any way you can increase potential numbers has to bode well for success.

Certainly the EPA stuff is a problem as you have to be shown to care. A timetable for improvement seems to be the answer.

You mentioned earlier common rail diesels being that much more efficient nowadays which they certainly are bit is there anything anywhere that looks at total emmissions against HP produced and weight and hence competiveness? A question not a dig by the way

Still not sure with the XPS as there is very little overhang on the transom and they were measured before the new age method of including swim platforms and god knows what else. Beam as well is likely measured at the top over rubrails etc. Anybody got of a copy of the UIM measurement standard as my copy of PB1 is 26 years old and I'm too tight to buy a new one

Powerboat racing may not be the right sport for you then.

The epa thing is more complex than it looks. it's also about trying to achieve a level playing field, based on engine capacity. pitching a 175 verado, opti, or etec against a 2.5 280 ROS simply isn't fair, the epa thing, lets us keep it close n fair.

the 2.5 280 may not be ideal for RB, but for CTC, P-C, or needles, it'd be a no brainer, especially if you have the budget to keep your 280 'fresh'.

Jamie Edwards SR9 with those motors would be running 100ish, against our 60mph, how could that ever be fair?? not to mention the safety thing.

dunno, not absolutely certain of weight.

Guessing at 2500 kilos, it works out to 4.24 my 28 is 4.8! of course, Swipes may be lighter than we think, ....or, the motors may be less powerfull that we think, or, a bit of both.

How quick is Red FPT averaged over 90 for the Cowes Race -Bloody dangerous that should be banned all these fast motorboats - Where's that eco membership form gone.

Ref single engine if one uses an Aux Motor does that have to be a EPA unit? or will CE suffice

Edit: you just know I'm gonna say a 280 is CE Marked Unit next ......
