Endurance Racing, the future??

The general feeling seems to be that endurance, or marathon racing inspires people to take part more than any other current form of racing. The number of boats that turned out at not insignificant personal cost for the Round Britain and CTC are testiment to this.

This is a theory shared by the RYA, BPRC and indeed Fabio Buzzi.

It maybe the going back to grass roots bit, it maybe the apparent reduction in red tape associated with this kind of racing (hopefully to stay) or may just be that people are sick to death of going round the cans in the bay, as has been the increasing theme over recent years.
Whatever the reason, we need to build on this interest and keep the momentum going. Of course, that doesn't mean dropping the ball with existing classes, and with any luck we'll see 3B back on the calender very soon.

So, obviously the CTC event promises a bright future if we can build that into a more rounded / integrated event, the 2009 race will hopefully be a step or two up the ladder from this years rescued weekend. But what other races could be invented / ressurected?

We already have Tim working on London > Monte-Carlo, and I understand there's a UK > Channel islands race currently getting some attention. But what others could be put in place? How about bringing back the Poole > Cherberge challenge? Ian Cutler and I did that back in '96 and it was an absolute blast. The record set that day by Mark Pascoe still stands, 52 mins at an average of just over 80mph. I think this could be a very interesting race to bring back.

Or maybe Brighton-Poole-Brighton, going round the back of the Island to avoid the issues with QHM?

Any suggestions??

I think it is becoming increasingly difficult to run a fast boat event from London, I know that Duncan from 'BladeRun' is having trouble getting them to agree to much. And also, wasn't it becoming hard to get into Calais (local authorities not being helpfull). but it would certainly be a great thing to ressurect. Clive Curtis started that one eh.

If I may put my 2p worth in here. First of all I think that what Jon is suggesting is simply fantastic. He is not suggesting that the wheel be re-invented because all of these races used to happen. However, I can assure you all that no one man can put on races of this type on their own. In my personal opinion it needs first a Club with members who are prepared to help with the organisation and then you need funds and then you need the support of the RYA. From my limited experience "finding funds" is almost a dirty word but without money you can't make anything happen.

You do have some clubs around who could help, you have the dormant UKOBA (they still have funds in the bank) who used to organise up to 8 races a year and great they were to. You could try to take that over. You have the Royal Motor down in Poole with a huge membership who used to organise the Cancer Research (still do). The Camden Trophy and the Needles Race and the timed trial/race to Cherbourg and back that Jon and I took part in over the years.

Also in my mind there should be a Portsmouth Ramsgate Portsmouth endurance race running out of Gunwharf Quays, easy enough to organise I would have thought and could be really good, running close to the coast but in a 4/5 South Westerly a real tough one.

It just needs a few of you guys to get together to get these and other races going. I know from conversations I had over last weekend that there is now huge interest and excitement in getting these great endurance races going again and that there are at least four/five really good guys interested in doing this but don't look to me to do it. My colleagues and I just want to concentrate on the BIG ONE at Cowes and that's all. We have done our bit, we turned the starting handle with the RB08 and Endurance Powerboat Racing burst into life again, much to our amazement, and then we had that amazingly lucky weekend last week. Now it's down to you guys to step up to the mark, drive it forward and have fun. There are certainly no shortage of boats, As old as we are we might even join in one or two races!!
ML.

You dunarf talk bollox at times Mike.

A club needs to be either chosen (ie, an existing club) or formed. I think there are probably plenty of existing, dormant clubs.
Then populate it with willing members, willing to race, willing to take on the other responsibilities that go with organising races, and willing work together, pulling in one direction without bickering & fighting.

The RYA appear to be very willing to help and work alongside such a club, we'll have to wait n see how that pans out, finacially at least. The RYA of course, don't actually organise events, they are the national authority, so help they will, but the putting on of the events, attracting sponsorship etc is down to the club, or should I say, it's members.

The BPRC have a particular lean towards endurance, but I don't know whether they have any interest in events other than Cowes, that is their baby.

UKOBA has some funds, which I think would complicate ressurecting that, and I'm not sure of the mechanics of picking it up. I think it's effectively a Honda club now, with I think, the Curtis's at the helm.

RMYC has an existing racing commitee, but politics may get in the way there, but I'd stand corrected.

I dunno, mebbe a new one is needed. the BERC maybe, 'British Endurance Racing Club', certainly an appropriate abreviation. , or BERA substiuting Club, with Association.

Can anyone think of another existing club that could be a 'goer'?

One of the funniest things I ever saw.

That bloke was a total cock.

Almost as Funny as when Nigel Cutler took the plunge in Cowes one night a year or so later complete with milk bottle bottoms. That Australian bar tender was quite handy.

Actually, I don't think I witnessed either of those events personally, but the legendary stories have been passed to me many times by those who did. 'Mr Draco' really was a cock though, he kept his boat next to mine at Merlin Quay.

We do have a Club Jon and you are a member. The Round Britain Race Club but that's not really a viable situation as I don't want to carry on running that after the RB08 Film showing in October. I think that one of the above Club's the answer. I will make some calls for you because as Tony said, The Future is Orange

New Club

So, the question is, Jon are you prepared to start a club and get involved (again) in reviving some of these fantastic events?

I'm pretty sure you would have the full support (and I dare say membership) of all involved in BoatMad.

Over to you JF.........
