I like the sound of it, so I'd give it a go. Been a few years since I last abandoned me boat in Guernsey and went back on the ferry!

Having been involved with helping organise a good few Poker Runs over here, I know only too well the difficulties with catering for numbers, and how important it is to get entries confirmed (and deposits paid) However, if we get a group of interested people/boats, it would obviously depend quite heavily on fair ish weather for the 100 mile channel crossing, so I wonder if the organisers would allow us some leaway on a late-ish entry so we can get a reasonable handle on the weather?

How much is marine diesel in the marinas over there now?

Is that so.

Can't organise events around a load of 'I might show if it's flat' racers.

cool, you big, tough endurance racers eh

That isn't what I was talking about, more the it's on, it's off, it's now back on, but on Sunday after the "proper" race on Saturday!

If the timed trial was the only thing, it would have a good chance of just getting cancelled if the weather looks dodgy, or too few entries to happen at all.

Combining the two events in one race, gave far too many problems, it just wasn't going to happen.

The result, with the Marathon event on sat (there & back) and timed event on Sunday, is a much, much better deal. also, if we had run it combined, only marathon boats would have been able to do the timed bit, which isn't in the spirit of the thing, now, on Sunday, it's completely separate, so anything can enter, completely open, like last time, trying for the outright record.

What would you suggest as an improvement?

reverse the days, time trial on saturday, with an overnight stay in glorious cherbourg, so that the time trialers can provide safety cover for the real racers, and run back to Poole with them for the prize giving and piss up on the Sunday. That way the sunday competitors can also go for a record, without have to make 2 trips!

no one in the Marathon class, who's looking to collect points for the series, would risk using their boat for the timed event, knowing they had a points race the following day. where as, if they do the sat race, and alls well, they'll likely run again on the sunday.

The marathon race is 'non stop', there & back.

The likes of Bohinc & Co would for sure want to do both if possible.

try reading me post again, numpty!

And besides, if you and your pals at the RYA don't get their act together pretty soon, you won't have many "marathon boats" ready for the big day!!!!!

How do you propose timing the marathon boats for the Poole Cherbourg record? (to the accuracy needed for an official record)

One of the many reasons it's gone the way it has, is because of this, there's no way you could get 30 boats perfectly in line at the start.

timed event boats go at intervals. (like last time)

Do you really think we didn't want to run it more simply?

erm, I expect a timekeeper and some sort of clock would come into the equation. how is the timing requirements different to any other event?

The last Poole - cherbourgh was a staggered start, but I can't really see how a massed start makes any real difference. And as they are going to have to go around some sort of mark in France, why not make it a gate, possibly the same one as the time trialers use so as to make the distances equal.

If someone came within a whisker of the existing record, there'd be all sorts of shit about innacurate timing, and you know there would.

As it is, everyone can do what they want. there will still be a bash in poole on sunday, and those timed event entries who want to stay in frog overnight, can. what's the problem?

And as I say, if it's lumpy, will there be any turnout at all for the PC?? probably not.

The club organising the event is trying to promote the Marathon racing and get a series going. The 'bolt on' of the timed event is therefore secondary in priority for them.

There's nothing stopping someone else organising a 'good' Poole Cherbourg record event if this one is deemed rubbish.

Guernsey Poker runs

Hi all it would be great if weather was good enought for you to join us I am sure we could give leeway to your entries up untill early in the morning of the event.
Marina Fees I will speak to the Harbour master about a discount/free moorings.
Fuel prices today are unleaded 66p ltr exelium 69p ltr desiel 53p ltr also we have discount cards and the fuel suppliers said they will pass on the discount for the event.
Again if you were coming we would think to run the longer course.

Regards
Kevin

Ere, you do like to modify your posts.....

What does it matter if they cant all keep in a line, a start is a start, so if you cross the "start line" a couple of seconds after someone else then that's your problem.

Maybe they should start running Coniston as 'multiple record attempts' to save time too. 20 at a time. Oh hang on, wouldn't that just be a short race?
