Nagging Question

With the CIII National Fleet down to 3 III C and 1 III B on a regular basis ,and the likely hood of 2 of the III C boats disappearing in 2011,I should imagine there is much muttering on future formats. Now we have 7 french boats appearing at Harwich, and one only has to look at www.offshorepassion.com
to see the vibrant situation there.

It might be an opportune time for the CIII organisers to sound out at Harwich, just why the French can do it,but the Brits are struggling, even the Italian and Turks have larger fleets.

You can look at the 2009-10 UIM Yearbook, and the page highlighling UK racing makes no mention of CIII,but refers to the CTC,Jet Sking and some smaller class circuit racing, despite the RYA claims of another fantastic year for powerboating in the UK.What can you say.

Graham, We have been carefully studying the French example and conclude that it's success is attributable to a few crucial factors: simplicity, rationality and application.
The French Offshore Championship is contracted out to Offshore Passion, a company run by Laurent and Cathy Plasse. They structure, organise and administer the five race series as well as obtaining the financing and promoting the sport to help individual competitors obtain their own sustainable sponsorship.
Decisions on rules, classes, fees, etc. are arrived at democratically with the primary stakeholders - the drivers. Classes are kept simple and are limited to a rational balance of UIM and French national. No class layering is visible and by limiting the series to only five national and international races a year, almost all competitors from the classes attend, guaranteeing numbers and encouraging desegragation. Local racing continues to thrive at club level.
At Harwich, we have already arranged to hold discussions with Cathy and Laurent, as well as Marcus from Finland, Thomas from Sweden and Anders from Norway, in a bid to establish commonality and share best practice. France's 'Sport' class is the equivalent of our OCR class, but simplified to 100 hp and 150hp. We are making arrangements to take 4 OCR 'A' teams to Corsica in September, to compete as guests in their 'Sport' finals, which should help to develop our own plans for the future.

Thanks for your response Barrie. All positive stuff.Needs something to avoid C III descending into obilvion.I was begining to think it was it could well go the same way as circuit racing ,where the UK was a top player and now it`s basically gone abroad.Sounds like minimum races ,and the complete UK fleet (All classes ) attending would be the order of the day.All this fragmentation, just makes the sport go backwards all the time.
Let`s hope we never descend into the mad U.S. format with 3 race bodies and god knows how many classes,so you can end up with 1 or 2 boats in each class.I think the class structure changes every year!
Of course all this organising could drive anybody crackers, and trying to stay sane could be the biggest hurdle.

Harwich Update

Thank you for those kind wishes. All we need now is for the weather to hold out and the drizzle to go away!

The Scandinavians are coming in on the Ferry on Thursday lunchtime and the 7 French teams, including 2 from Corsica are arriving through the night and on Friday. With our 4 British teams this makes 14 Class 3C on the starting line up for the Europeans.

With 6 OCR A boats and 3 B boats in the two Offshore Circuit Race Heats, this should make for some good action close inshore in Dovercourt Bay although not as close as the 17 crews from Thundercats who are racing off the beach in the Bay.

Its a shame only 6 Marathon boats will start the first 125 mile National Marathon race to Broadstairs and back, but they should arrive back to Rough's Tower, just in time to watch the start of the 3C Europeans and to join in with the Race Party Entertainment on the Saturday evening.

Finally, to close each day, there will be 4 V24s on the starting grid alongside the Offshore 3Bs and a club French RIB who is hopefully coming to join us. Sadly, Will Nurse's Cougar Cat has had to withdraw due to a technical problem during testing.

In anticipation that many crews will stay over on Sunday evening, we have added a hog roast/BBQ to the programme, commencing after Prizegiving to celebrate with the winners. Tickets can be purchased from Race Admin at £5 per head.

We would like to take the opportunity of wishing all the competing crews the best of luck at the weekend - but most importantly SAFE RACING!

Yes huge gratitude to Rear Admiral Sir Barry Williams and the delightful Lady Sheena ........ am presuming you had a quick trip out to Sealand coming back armed with titles. Devon contingent of 'OCR' looking forward to joining in a fab weekend of sport socialising and entertainment.
The simple secret of reestablishing successful powerboating is to get everyone together, agree what is wanted, agree it with the relevant authorities, ABIDE BY THE AGREEMENT and go forward together. Simple really.........The french fight tooth and nail for what they want but seldom lose what they got!

Thank you again Barry, Sheena, Chris and Barbara et al ....it 'll be a brilliant show.

Very Very tragic!

I can't believe I'm posting that Ian Stirling (Old Beardy) lost his life today racing in Harwich.

It doesn't seem real.

An extremely sad day.

I think it's a bit early to speculate and I'm sure there will be a public announcement with details when appropriate. But there was an incident that left his nav with a broken shoulder and Ian obviously suffered more serious injuries, that turned out to be fatal.

Ian was undoubtedly one of the nicest guys you could ever meet and an absolute gentleman of the sport. I'm shocked and upset, as I'm sure all that knew him will be.

A racing accident, no other boats involved, claimed the life of Ian Stirling today. The incident took place on the third lap with Ian challenging for second place in the UIM 3C European Championship race one.

All racing has now been cancelled as a mark of respect.

Please NO MORE POSTS/CONJECTURE on this subject.

I don't see any conjecture! And if those who knew Ian wish to express their sorrow, or best wishes for family & friends on this sad day, that's just fine!
