The finishing line of the Harwich East Coast Marathon will be in the waters of the principality of Sealand ( www.sealandgov.org); a micro nation country situated 6 miles off the coast of Harwich. Sealand has existed for many years, has repelled an invasion and remains, to this day, a sovereignty in its own right.
All finishers in the marathon will be granted the citizenship of Sealand, while the class winners will be awarded the title of Lord, Lady, Baron or Baroness, as they so choose. The investitures will be conducted by HRH Prince Michael of Sealand, at a ceremony in the VIP banqueting tent on Saturday evening.
These fine, highly sought after, peerages might also be bestowed on the other classes of racing, depending on how well they impress his HRH.
Sealand’s government are considering making offshore powerboat racing the national sport of the country and issuing licences to its international offshore team in 2011.
Team selection will be restricted to only the very best few hundred competitors who strive to achieve international recognition, and can afford the princely £19.99 international licence fee. However, this will include Sealand's annual national powerboat licence fee of £4.99, plus p&p. There will be no medicals required, as His Highness thinks that if you race a powerboat it’s not your body that needs examining.
Sealand’s international sports minister will be in Harwich to commence the selection process for next year team, while scouts will be sent to other offshore events in 2010. Sealand has a powerful international reputation to maintain, so sadly, has had to restrict the competitors who qualify for its elite team to 250, a tough, but necessary, decision that favours the few.
Team clothing and supporters merchandising will be available soon.

My Honourable Friend, Lord Williams of Sealand,
Has this been passed by the Royal Yachting Association of Sealand's ORC Committee?

I'd just like to say well done to Barry and Sheena, and anybody who is helping with the event at harwich. They've taken on a shedload of work with all the classes that are invited OCR 3B, 3C European Champs, V24, Thundercats,Marathon, Flying Kilo runs...this event has the lot. And thats just the racing.
It must have been a nightmare jumping through all the hoops just to get the Race Instructions done, . (all 28 pages of them), including all the different courses needed , so Hats Off to both.
I hope all the competitors do their bit now and get their entries in, in plenty of time to support what is shaping up to be a mammoth event.
See you all there........................

Only if you can prove you're over 90.
You won't have any problems Ian.

Some interesting background on SEALAND:
It was built in the 2nd WW as a gun platform, & was outside territorial waters.
In the 1960's it was "colonised" by Roy Bates & broadcast as a Pirate Radio Station, as Radio Essex,
There was a slight "war" with the Radio Caroline organisation, who wanted the struicture as a base, for their operations, once the then UK government brought in anti-pop pirate legislation in 1967 (Marine etc broadcasing offences bill - still current).
The Bates family retained control & still occupy the structure I belive.
The only other such structure outside UK waters was demolished by the armed forces, to avoid any other "free-radio" operators occupying it.
Other anti-aircraft forts used as pirate-radio stations (Radio City, Radio 390, etc) were all inside UK territorial waters.
It is an interesting angle, & perhaps Sealand could offer those who are disalusioned with the UK's current powerboat administration, an alternative, with licences etc ???
Happy Days !

Dave,
Those are kind thoughts and very kind and very much appreciated.
It's the committes of both SEPA and AYC that are organising this and all we are trying to do is to return some fun and laughter and some razz-a-matazz back into powerboat racing, same as it used to be.
If the means to achievement embraces a combined rock and pop festival, well, so be it. The music will subsidise the racing and Ticketmaster don't accept dud acts, not that we've ever heard of any of them.
Mind you, the logistics for Harwich are intimidating: - 1000 seater VIP marquee, extra London exit trains laid on, 120 security staff, 5 doctors, 7 paramedics, 4 ambulances, 1 field hospital with cardiac surgery facilities, (probably for us), 50+ marshalls, as well as all the blue light and maritime agencies, 2 helicopters, plus a heli pad exclusively for Simon Cowell. We have had to arrange anti terrorist plans, spectator facilities for 30,000 on land, each day and 1,000 spectator craft on the water, as well as policing the 125 nm marathon course between Essex and Kent.
We have a Turkish UIM Commissioner, a Welsh organiser, Surrey OOD, an ex. Merchant Navy Safety Officer and a Scottish Coastguard in race control, so the VHF logger will have an interesting time.
Thanks again for your kind support and we look forward to seeing you and Shirley in Harwich.
