Well I can not remember!
But I do believe that if you read Exe Powerboat & Ski Club journal "The Cleaver" (rather than MB&Y) that there is a foto and a bit in the 1st EDition about Tom Thornycroft doing the Oslo Olympic Motorboat Race in 1912.
ciao
Just in passing (your'e too slow), I think Johannes was on the other side
and ....
Tom Thornycroft was the man who won the first ever motorboat race that ran from Cowes to Torquay (Brockman Cup Race) in the 1920's.

1908 report
It`s always amusing to read these old reports.I wonder how a report of the CTC 09 would seem to someone reading it in 2109,and what craft would making the headlines.Going through the water would be old hat,low level winged or ground effect craft piloted by crew who would need NASA type training to drive them, and sponsors paying silly money to do it,or is this the stuff of fiction.

From the Guinness Book Of Motorboating Facts & Feats published in 1978 >>
Lorne Campbell said,
"One suspects that circuit racers will eventually get up to speeds of 160 mph.....Offshore boats will probably never go much over 120 mph....
The craft will be multi-hulls of some sort, as monohulls have obviously reached their limit."
From the same book a chap called -
F.P Andrews said,
"The microprocessor will have a very great impact on the marine electronics industry in the next two decades.....the average boat owner will have this large computing power at his fingertips.."
Where is F.P Andrews now? and Lorne is still doing the job!

Sadly, my subscription to the "Cleaver" failed - something to do with Topsham $?
I think your chum from Austria looks great in this pic - Blame Chris Davies if you don't like it.

Tim,
Thanks for the 1908 Harwich Regatta Cup input.
I was amazed that this solid silver cup survived for a hundred years inside a relatively insecure cabinet in Harwich Sailing Club and only recently got cleaned and scrutinised before finally appreciation of its value and significance.
We aren't terribly concerned about the 1908 Olympic angle, because with RB12, we have a more pertinent Olympic angle anyway. Would have been nice, but not event changing.
Look forward to seeing you at Salcombe in two weeks time, we'll have a good chat.
Barrie

"There will be a VIP Matquee for the racers"
What's one of them?
Clearly Fiddy is the mastermind behind these plans, as he's obsessed with black tie do's. And he thinks everyone else is too.

Black Tie?
I can't remember ...
ever having to wear a black tie at Northwood House.
Thought it was a 'Formal Yachting' Dress do.
Perhaps Ciao can ask TP?
And remember that it is an offence to wear brown shoes after 18:00 hrs (Alpha) within 2 perches of the Squadron.

Another view
My chum who lives in the Harwich area finds all this talk of the powerboat circus coming to Harwich ,which will enhance it`s standing as a coastal resort, a bit of a joke.As he says even the cruise liners which call there have their passengers shipped out to other places of interest, being as there ain`t much to offer the punters there. He reckons the only way Harwich could improve,is from another raid by the Luftwaffe.

Never mind the "Matquee", I want to get a good look at all the " beaustiful" girls!
I'm guessing that's a cross between "beautiful" and "busty"?

I might have missed something here, but which classes are making up this huge assembly of powerboats? I didn't see Harwich on the 2010 P1 calendar.

Well, from what I've heard it's no longer on the Honda calendar either. After what was a very successful meeting, where plans were discussed for free entry, start money, subsidised fuel, free food and entertainment, together with on boat cameras, giant TV screens for the spectators and loads more, someone from Honda decided this wasnt enough!
It seems that they somehow managed to contact the promoter of the proposed event, demanding an additional £40k for Honda to attend, along with demands for their own helicopter, and a seperate start.
Sadly, Honda won't be attending now, as they've been told the extras wouldn't be happening, and were no longer invited. So, Honda had it on a plate, and lost it due to one or two greedy individuals.

3c,3b OCR A, B, V24, Ribs, Thundercats, Pretty much the same as the rest of the seasons calendar really.
Bottom line is that this event will happen, it will be quite big compared to our other events. So please do not speculate. If anyone needs to know anything please ask Barrie Williams.

I'm aware of Harwich, and the intensions of making it a big event, as I visited the venue with Barrie earlier in the year and met the locals who'll be supporting it.
What I didn't know about, was that it's apparently a FIDDYKOBA event.
I have to be honest, that worries me a little.
