If Honda pulled the sponsoring of the series, it would be dead by the end of the week.

I reckon, if they pulled the cash on monday, by wednesday you'd see the Honda motor replaced with Merc, and by friday the Cougar would be replaced with a Mannerfelt! Honda-Cougar 225 RIP (sorry Pete & Steve)

Not wishing to sound toooo much like Dr Death but no sponsorship deal lasts forever.

At some point Honda will withdraw, it's a fact of life. They will move onto pasture new.

It's what is in place for such an eventuality. I assume somebody has thought about it?

NOOOOOOOT!!!!!! (Borat Voice)

The 21 will be OK that could have some use but the 225 would have less of a market (Ping !!!!!) Stick a Verado on it

FWIW I hope that is a long way off & the series continues to enjoy success

There's no need to be so defensive, it's not a question of wanting it to fail at all. It's just that the truth is that it's an unlikely engine to choose, and an unlikely boat to choose, so if it wasn't that way because Honda are sponsoring/controling, why would anyone choose to keep either of those parts.

It's not just Honda either, I believe that if the P1 budget were pulled by the owner/sponsor, that series would struggle and certainly couldn't continue with the massive show that rolls up at venues at the moment. And those guys get to choose their motors & hulls.
It wasn't a dig at Honda, it's just my opinion about heavily subsidised (by singular owners) series and the pitfalls of being owned by one sugar daddy.

It's not just the money either is it, when there's an overall sponsor/owner, he calls the tune and maintains control. once 'let loose', the politics & in-fighting that we see destroy everything attached to offshore, will probably do it's work.

BTW, I've absolute no idea what the answer is.

I must admit i'm in favour of the honda series... I agree with what everyone is saying that it needs the big sponsership, but over in guernsey it was a major factor in bringing back powerboating (in my opinion of course!).
I don't doubt for a moment that the fact we have the 2ltr world championships here this year is largely down to the massive amounts of effort put in by certain individuals, but i seem to remember a summer a few years ago when we had the zapcats and the honda series over here. It was our first return to powerboating after losing the class a's years ago.

The turnout from the public was huge, largely due to the racing taking place mainly in havlet bay - where it could be seen from shore. To accompany the races we had a big show by the model yacht pond, and again imo, it won back the public's support of powerboating in guernsey. In a way i guess it was a testing ground to see if it was successful, and it was.

I'm not claiming to be any kind of an expert on any of this, and i'm sure i've got a few points wrong, but from 1 guernsey enthusiast's point of view, it brought powerboats back here, and gave the public a great day out.

As is the case with the zapcats, it also surely gives up and coming drivers and navs a first step on the ladder, and that can only be a good thing... look at cider daze for example, they started off in the smaller class and have now moved up to the bigger boats. might not be the cheapest way, but powerboating isn't cheap!

so yeah, i agree they could be faster, the boats could be better, various things could be improved... but nothing's perfect and for what it is i think it offers great entertainment. all purely in my opinion though!!

Sometimes you have to look further than the engines and boats. The series draws in crowds and quite a few people in the crowd are of the younger generation, if you want powerboat racing to live on you need to get young people involved which the Honda series does.

Great to intice young talent into the sport agreed, but only youngsters with very rich parents realistically can afford to start racing in Honda!!

I have no doubt the weekend was a huge success, the series is after all a great spectacle for the public.

My spies tell me that the new format is only being enjoyed by the people who are further down in the championship, and by putting the leaders on the back row for every race in a one design championship is artificially handicapping reliability and good driving in a series that is meant to be down to just that.

Being from Hull and new to powerboats and knowing very little how do the Honda series compare with the 2lt class boats are they faster?
I believe some of the Honda guys have quoted their boats @ 80mph + !!

How fast do they go?
I would have thought a light weight racing boat with 225hp would have been faster than 80mph, just thinking a Escort Cosworth or Impreza kind of power.

Is honda really the biggest fleet in racing? ok so yes it does pull high crowd numbers but thats because it has the opportunities to get into venues and get media coverage no other class can, why? because of the money power behind it.

your right we should be proud of a british class showing the racing can survive with out the p word and arguements but why aren't we? because the racing is bloody dangerous, in all the 'exciting' videos of crews being flipped out on the course or collisions do you see any other crews stopping to assist? sometimes even coming close to running the fallen guy down. and don't come back with the 'large number of boats on a tight course' arguement as look at how many boats were in OCR or even when V24 first started or more recently the batboat/verado series.

i have to agree the series would disappear if honda moved on, i don't think it will be that soon though as it still pulls the crowds n pulls the money, a sad death will however cut that short

Actually your incorrect about stopping to help, I have been to all of the races this season and every time someone has gone out of a boat the competitor behind has always stopped and helped

The max i have heard of is 74mph but that was with a strong tidal current, they usually reach 65-70mph. Just out of interest who was quoting 80mph.
