licences
hope i have the facts correct,Have spoken to jp@ RYA and he told me that anyone who has raced before will be issued a licence but any complete novices will have to have a level of training. This will not meen going to school .What the RYA want is for each club to have an experienced driver to take novices out on water to make sure they can handle the craft they would like to race, the OOD at the event will still have to put them through flags ,collisions at sea etc etc.So i dont think it is as bad as first mentioned. There will be a meeting this sat to determin what level is expected,so there will be more info coming out

I also spoke to JP yesterday with regard to 2010 RYA Licence requirements.
My view on this matter is to wait for documentation & clarity from SO31 4YA
My advice for Marathon racers is to get a medical and buy a full RYA Marathon licence, if you wish to take passengers with you for the CTC for example, wait for the RYA to tighten up their rulings for Event Licences.

I would assume the other way round this is to have one or two experienced licence holders in the boat and gain experience that way without having to do the course - can you race one full licence and one provisional without the course?

The issue may be having to have licence holders in control of the boat, not just in it.

As I understand it, there will no event licenses issued from now, except for passengers that are not involved in the driving or navigation of the boat (corporate guests, sponsors,wives/husbands, ballast), This would apply to many marathon boats with crews of 3 or more.
The upshot is, both driver and navigator are responsible for getting the boat from A to B, or round a course, and both should be trained/assessed before being issued with a provisional licence. Details on the NEW application form.

Also heard yesterday that RYA/MAIB unhappy with boats of different speeds running in the same race on shorter courses, with event licenses limited and menagerie fleet races - is this the end of the Basic race for smaller boats, or will course size be the deciding factor?

Don't disagree with the idea in principle, think about other motorsport with vehecles of similar relative speed - you have to do a course and exam to get a license from the msa
