Mmn, it's listed as a BPRC event, but It's the first I've heard of it.

Would be nice to do.

Maybe John Moore could throw some light on it.

It was put on the calendar by ML months ago - various issues sadly did not allow for the race to run.

The latest RYA calendar reflects this.

At the moment the BPRC are only running the 2 heats of the UIM Marathon World Cup at Cowes with the Harmsworth Trophy as the overall prize!

It must be worth talking to Barrie Williams to see if the outbound leg of the Solent-Harwich-Solent race could make up the 1st heat of the world championships? 215-ish miles, true long distance. That, the Solent 100 and the CTC would make a fine set as world title qualifiers.

I am afraid that was me being overly ambitious. I did put it on the ORC calender back in June but of course events overtook us and it became quite clear that we (BPRC) would not be able to run it as well as Cowes in 2010.

In retrospect, I think the "authorities" won't allow ANY races down the Thames anymore, as the RB2012 mob have discovered, so bang goes another great race.

It was certainly one of those "memorable moments" when you came back up river after 120 miles of flat out racing to come round the final bend to see Tower Bridge in front of you.

The attrition rate on that race was always huge (floating debris being the main culprit) with usually only a few boats making it back from a large fleet of starters.

I will talk with the promoters today. I can't see why not - sounds good.

Regarding the London-Ramsgate-London, we are also organising a Ramsgate Powerboat Festival on 24-26 September, with most classes except 3C (Worlds in Corsica, same weekend). At last week's meeting with the Harbourmaster, the L-R-L was casually mentioned and I believe, with careful negotiation with the PLA and MCA and sensible promotion, the race could run again.
Last time I did it, was racing against ML in his similar Revenger 25. Shooting the Thames Barrier at 60mph was character building.
Paddy and Ian Atlee won the OCR class in a Picton/M115, even after a 'wrong slot' up the Medway on the return leg.
The annual boat party held on the sandbanks off shivering sands, was always enjoyed by those attendees that cut the corner on the outbound leg.

....but the company was good, I remember that our beach party consisted of a couple of World Champions a World Record holder and previous winners of the race. There was also the advantage of having the highlights of the start but we got back to the bar sooner, with minimal cost or damage, albeit with a healthy thirst and appetite :-)

Ye that bit was fun ... it was great running with the 40' D2S for a short while on the way back and I must say that the geriatric was pretty quick back then he rustled up the results and thrust them into your hand not long after the finish, good show, will he be doing that again oh and the prize giving bit was good where the guy with the mic welcomed a nice girl to the stage to collect something by the name of Tracy and it was a big hairy guy so not that sort of a Tracy, guess his dad was a Thunderbirds fan

Didn't you win class 3C in 1984?

Interesting!

Would SEPA consider taking on such an event? Given your connections at Ramsgate and locality, you (as a club) would be well placed.

I really enjoyed being a part of the "reenactment" of the London Calais London this year - or last.

It is a great route - and brought many memories back from my last time of racing it.

Sadly, we were told to slow to 7 knots from just past Gravesend to Chelsea on the way home -

It did rather extend the day.
