Had a cracker of a day on Saturday. Its the first time Jim and I have raced the rib in anger since 2004. The weather was fantastic, the venue was fantastic, the organisation was slick and the officials were on the ball to make everything run smoothly.
For us it was a proper cheap day's racing all for £80 we had 28 race starters and 22 safety boats. It was great to see some of the old BIBOA trophies being awarded too. I especially enjoyed Barney Rubble's (Bob Turnbull) enthusiasm as the more he drank after the race the louder and cockier he got and shouted a classic powerboaters phrase "I need a trolly for all these trophies!" well done Bob 1st race, a class win and the Columba trophy.
Hopefully this event will encourage the relaxed grass roots racing that we all enjoy!

I think it proved with Bobs Ilfracombe event this year being FREE it is not just cost.
If the existing/proposed offshore combined class's and Ribs joined forces would this not reduce the costs for all which has got to be a good thing?I think there is still a reluctance for beginers to have a go and be totally out classed by the hard core racers where including ribs might allay some concerns with perhaps a more varied field even if it was a seperate race for Ribs/Beginers and Basic.I know there is an element of rejection to rubber but we would never complain if the 'Mrs' dressed in it and also no concerns at being rescued by one
Just my thoughts

I understand that bit but fee's must have been set before the event and then must have confirmed entrants. Some of the big ribs may needed cranes too. Nic, I raced for a few years and will be doing so again next year in one form or another and the free entry fee has never come up. Cost is a massive factor when doing a full season. Especially when you are doing huge mileage over the year. Accomodation and beer money all add up.

The reason I said entry fees were not the main factor as Bob's event at Ilfracombe was Free Entries and Free Licenses to try and get some newbies but with only three taking up the offer-one being me.I am also considering more races next year either a race classs or Basic's and certainly costs are a big consideration hence my suggestions to get the entry numbers up and the fees down,Nic

I understand where you are coming from nic, as far as getting new people into the sport, but it did not entice ex racers either.
If money is not the issue, then in your oppinion ( or any one else who has an oppinion on this matter) then what is the reason for low numbers?
i hope you do get into the full swing of the racing as it is a buzz.
Good luck and may be see you on a start line next year.
Paul.

It was raced by Dave Boakes,I think last time was 2001'ish,I think there was a few Boakes' racing all brothers,he packed up when the XR2's were banned then kept it for pleasure use.I spoke to him recently and he was pleased to know it was back being used competetively(OK me following the rest of the field).Cheers Nic
