Marathon is growing
Had a chat today with Barrie Williams who has been working hard with 3 venues, Harwich, Ramsgate and Cardiff, to secure help and support with a promoter & locally for events in those towns to be run by SEPA (South East Powerboat Association)
It seems, that if all goes to plan, which it looks like it will, Both Harwich & Ramsgate, along with the promoter, would like Marathon class to attend.
The format for the racing was sketchy at first, with possibly only sprint, or kilo runs by the larger Marathon boats, just to add something to events that are fundimentally for smaller (OCR, 3C, 3B etc) boats, with the promoter helping teams with free entry, help with fuel, accomodation etc. But now it seems to be moving onto a different level.
Given the increased interest, John Puddifoot suggested at a meeting yesterday with Harwich, that the Marathon classes could 'race' to Harwich, from say the Solent area (roughly 185 miles, or 215 if we have to go the long way round the back of the island) join the event (to include a large music festival etc, with Harwich having Madness, Bad Manners & the Specials at the 2010 event, clearly a Ska bash) then on the following day, after a kilo demo by each boat on it's way to the muster area, another race back home to the Solent.
A similar plan for the Ramsgate event, with the start / finish being 'maybe' the new marina at Portland.
The racing is also possibly being syndicated into China and Russia's gambling system (they'll bet on anything apparently)
So how much interest can we drum up for this race to Harwich and back in late July, and Ramsgate and back in September?
I know Nick & I are well up for it.
If it all happens, it would make July through September serious Marathon season! That would be a proper championship I reckon, another 4 legs, totaling 800 odd miles to add to the Cowes event.

Sounds like a great idea to me and it can only be great for the sport and for the guys (and girls) who are buying boats to take part.

OK, it's looking like a goer!
Solent - Harwich on 31 July
Harwich - Solent on 1 August
Weymouth - Ramsgate 25 September
Ramsgate - Weymouth 26 September
Dover Coastguards are enthusiastic and offered full co-operation.
I think we got us some races!

I think this is going to be amazing and full credit to Barrie. The time and effort involved in making all of this work is going to be formidable. Marathon is indeed growing.

Posting with the danger of getting lynched, as an outsider for the marathon and RB racing, but a fan to watch, i do have a question about cats being allowed to run.
I underdstand the Tolemans raced in 1984 in cats, what is different today?
How different is todays race format?
Again this is only for my curiosity.

I would suggest you do a search, as this has been covered, over, and over.
You might also view the video on the class 1 accident thread. That 160mph 44' unlimited budget cat, fits the rules perfectly for Class B Marathon as laid out by the Round Ireland committee, yes, not the top class, class B!
That cat, appears to blow over and re enter upside down, backwards, and disintegrate the canopy, killing the occupants. Marathon has little, or no safety cover due to the nature of the courses we race on. Is that kind of craft a good idea for that kind of racing? And, do we need any more classes? the fleet is growing as it is, and is interesting, affordable and competitive. That will change if multihulls are allowed to become the top dogs due to the technology and costs involved in building high end multi's. Above all of this, whilst still under UK control, it was agreed that the rules would stand as was, for at least 4 years, so in my opinion, that alone means we shouldn't change a thing, or we will look stupid, just like the cruiser classes of the 80's where rules were changed every year to suit one 'influential racer' or another, and it quite rightly made cruiser racing a laughing stock.
If we had an incident like that in a Marathon race, it would spell the end of the series. The whole concept would get torn apart by the authorities (quite rightly) and it would be dead & burried.
If something aint broke, it don't need fixing.
