Update

Hi!

The boat does look like a boat now and not a Blue Peter project! It is just about to go into the paintshop and then we are over there shortly to make final decisions on rigging etc.

We'll take a few pictures and post them on the forum.

With any luck we will be out testing in the States end of Feb with the boat being over here late March early April. Unfortunately things were a little delayed due to the hurricane ( the tornado just missed the boat shed by a mile!) the resulting powercuts etc caused some problems as you can imagine.

If you have a look at www.extremeboat.com you'll be able to see some pictures of the build.

Will keep you posted!

I bought V69 from someone who will race P1 in 2006. Does that help?

This may be in addition to the existing British entries, or it may be one of them.

Just a note after all these fantastic mph's mentioned, P1 Super
Sport regs limit top speed to 80mph and 95mph for evolution.
So any faster is a waste & leads to penalties. Just thought it was worth a mention!

You're right. To keep the racing under 'Pleasure navigation rules' they have to limit the speed somehow. This year it will be based on an average speed and not top speed so should be interesting!

A huge amount of the boats racing are capable of well over 100mph but P1 are trying to prevent 'cheque book' racing and thus limiting speed. In theory this limits cost and prevents it going down the same route as Class 1. Whilst its a bit frustrating it does mean more boats get out there to race as it is more affordable.

The boats are not limited to racing in just P1 either, if they bring back Cowes Torquay Cowes then there would be a very competitive and fast fleet of boats just itching to do that!

Very nice. Have you made your choice for engines and drives?

I am a big offshore fan and have been since the age of 10 and therefore look foreward to the coming P1 season with the growing British boats and crews, and it is fantastic that Boat racing is finally making a come back thanks to P1. The reason why I said the above is i don't want people thinking I am not a greatfull fan......but......personally I think the rules suck, I don't belive in loading boats with loads of weight to fit a speed rule, racing is about the best that technoledgy has to offer so if one takes a base line ie 3.5kg per 1 hp we have for 525hp 3850kg not 4250, the problem lies in the fact without weight loading the speeds would be well over 100, secondly I dont belive if you double the power you should double the weight of a petrol boat no formula for land sea or air has ever shown doubling power gives you twice the speed, there are formulas showing % ratios for such. Diesel boats have a large advantage over normally asperated petrol boats when hauling along there overgown weight, 900hp, 6300kg due to there enormous torque, poss double that of the stated hp, a petrol lambo is likely to make much less torque than hp, thereby there is a huge disparity.
I would have thought if you require boats to be no faster than x, then limit power not load them like a tanker. I know my outspoken views will not be liked and neither may they be totally accurate, just my thoughts. anyway I look forward to the racing

cfun - I thought I would "fill in a few blanks" for you - the reasoning behind the restrictions is that the UIM (rightly or wrongly) consider an average of over 95 mph too dangerous for non canopy boats, and that is part of the attraction of P1, although some of the boats are very close to having canopies !

Just to correct your maths a little 2 X 525 is 1050 multiplied by 3.5 is 3675 kilos. for Evolution or 4725 for Super Sport.

I can see where you are coming from, but I think that the class structure was designed so that existing boats and in particular engines would be eligible to race without too much modification - I think this was necessary to get the class off the ground to begin with.

I hope you enjoy the seasons racing, and if you visit any of the National races this year come and say hi!

Thanks Cookee had a bad calculator moment it was burning this afternoon on import weights and sizes but clearly not on engines, for P1. I do agree the speed restriction must have been much needed from many points of view. Just felt loading the boats with weight was not an ideal solution as USA boats with, 525hp and I belive 3633kg have achieved speeds of 114 although not in a race. So perhaps if 95 was the desired speed a much lower hp should have been looked at rather than load the boats with weight, that looks even worse as the hp increases, talking petrol here not diesel ie 900hp 6300kg I assume bit of a heavy lump

Just noticed on the P1 site that Red Devil is entered in super sport, which of course means more weight, on reflection it may seem I was having a go at Red Devil, but I can assure you I was not, I was just passing a comment yesterday about P1 original origins ie for the older maybe CUV type Ali Boats that were lying around from the great old mono days, which may have been slower and heavier than todays light composite designs, and therefore maybe there should have been a review of weight+engine type v speed especialy considering the speed restriction in both classes. ps... good luck Red devil if you drive it like the rib you should do well
