I know ORDA are working extremely hard to put together an excellent season of racing and the calendar looks excellent!
So I was interested to read in the new PB1 that you can only do 2 basic races under a day license now.

If I interpret this correctly, any boats that wish to do F200 basic races must upgrade to a full (provisional) license after their first 2 races. And surely, if you're having to pay for a full national license, why would any teams want to race in anything other than the national class?

Just wondered what everyone elses view of this was. If a team begins on a basic license and then upgrades, will their results for the first 2 be retrospectively upgraded to the national class?

Not had a chance yet to review much else, but I also understood that wings were gonna be allowed this year - but looks like PB1 says their not.

The other point to think about is that are 2 races enough time to assess whether someone deserves a full license?

Whats the price difference between a National and a Basic Licence

IMHO it sucks. Remove the foundations and the building will topple
As a converation topic would you need a licence if a race was run outside the 12 mile limit ???????

After 2 races you upgrade to provisional national, with 4 races and an oral exam to count, as per the current format. Additionally, some classes require "training" now, but PB1 states to refer to the application form, which I don't have to hand. Will dig it out later.

I don't have any objection to limiting the no of races under a basic license other than a basic racer who does 3 races per year is now gonna have to shell out for a full national license, despite not necessarily racing in a national class at all. So that 3rd race is gonna cost at least an extra hundred quid in license fees.

Would it not have been better to create a "basic" license on a pro-rata fee basis that has the same requirements to obtain as a national (ie sign off by OOD's, VHF, oral exam, training etc), to ensure safety on the water, but without spanking the newbies for full license fees?

So Mr Noisy's crew for example - if they do 3 races, are they gonna have to shell out for a national license for a nonexistant class?

I'm sure there's more to it than I'm aware of, would be interested in knowing some of the background. Hopefully I'm missing something that makes it all clear!

It just seems that they are trying "encourage" National licence holders. But there are I'm sure people that just want to do basics without the upgrade to National & Championship status.

NOTE: No more than two Event Licences to the same person in the same season – thereafter a full licence must be applied for. The cost of the two event licences may be taken off the cost of a full licence

as per RYA circular - really means you either do one or two basic events or five or so to make good economics.

Don't really see it as a major problem as people tend to do just that. Always going to be the odd exception and guess you cannot please everyone all the time.

Guess I got the wrong of it, Put quite well Adam.
Would it just be a licence issue then and no requirement for the boat to meet national regs as opposed to basic regs

We've always had training in Kclass from the word go, before you even get a licence.

Don't bother looking at the form as my kids applications said about it but it was not attached.

Except, this means that basic boats that would have previously entered the RMYC 3 race series (brass monkey, cancer charities, club classic finals) will now have to stump up for a full license.

IMVHO, it would have been good to settle for 3 events as the basic race limit, specifically to enable people to enter the RMYC event series who aren't doing the national series.

So there's reason why 3 would have been good, what was the reason against 3 and in favour of 2?

Please be aware, I'm not stating that I think 2 events is unjust, but I think it's important to have transparency so that people can see the whole picture and better understand the background to them.

and if anyone is entering all 3 races,which is a good effort,you only get a trophy if you finish first in the series,nothing for 2nd or 3rd
