Hi!

I was the guy who filmed him :-)
The main Problem is that the engine was mounted in center.
Fletcher recommends 3 cm to the right, thats true!
My engine is also mounted 3 cm to the right! ( Fletcher Arrowshaft199 ) and on the 199 of my brother the V6 225 Yammi is also mounted 3 cm to the right.
I really know what i am talking about. Many years ago , my dad bought a brand new 199. This stupid Dealer mounted the engine to the centre. the handling was really poor :-(

Best regards!
Andi

I think this thread is gettin a bit wayward, we are talkin about a 21 Phantom here not a fletcher, take your advice from the people on here who have got or had a P21. My advice would be to get your 20 inch mid, bolt your engine in the middle and for pleasure use have the centre of your gearbox about 2 inches below the bottom of the vee on your hull. If it 's still to low you can lift it a hole. Your problem is the length of your engine, not how many cms of offset you have or havent got!

I totally agree i did have a 25" leg and it didn't work at all ( as i previous wrote).
Running a 20" leg no and the chinewalk is much less - my gearbox is about 2 cm below the hull, enige about 3 cm offset...

i've said it before as well, mount it in the centre and move stuff around to compensate, try changing the prop too.

I have a 21 and I have my 250 XS in the middle with a 20" leg (Try to keep the centre of gravity as low in the water as possible and the prop just beneath the running water surface to minimalise the drag from the prop in the water). I run a stock 24 4 blader.

The fuel tank is as far back as it can go without hitting the bilge pump.

The battery and billet battery box, full oil tank and latham pressure thingy is on the starboard side.

The trim pump is on the port side.

The engine was sat on the transom when first fitted but I found it porpoised a bit at low speed. Raised it up one inch and voila, No problems at all and still can pull a skier deepwater, ringos etc without cavitation and run at nearly 80mph at 6400 rpm trimmed out with no problems.

After writing all that its what Burty wrote

I hope this helps.

Good luck

Many Thanks

Hi All,

Thanks for the advice. I'm trying to locate a 20" mid, hopefully to exchange for my 25". It makes sense that she will lay over more, with the engine weight higher up. So, I'll change the mid, drop the engine back on the transom and see what happens. As the engine sits now, the leading edge (point) of the gear box is 15.5 cm below the bottom of the hull. There is a cut out in the transom, it's about 8cm. The engine now sits 6cm above this. The prop is a Laser II and it has the markings 48 - 16546 21P on it. Hope all this makes sense.

Have attached a picture of different size legs. Any suggestions? If I've got it right.

Red 5, I feel terrible as I never like correcting people, but and this can be confirmed by Rob, I was just in front running fully trimmed out along Torcross line in the flat last year, which would put me nicely at 79mph GPS verified.

Although this year might have been an ounce slower as a few pounds have been gained somehow

Sorry, Try this

Sorry, I miss aligned the length, from the end of the mid to the point of the gearbox. Of course, that will remain the same, whatever mid goes on her.

Question !

Does anyone think that I would be better to cut 4cm from the transom and change the mid for a "short" giving the 2cm below the hull and dropping the centre of gravity too.

Peter

'Old Beardy' on this forum (Ian Stirling), raced a P21 with a 15" mid, and I believe he did just that.
Although his boat wasn't quick enough in calm conditions to compete with the B23's and Cats, when it chopped up, he was an easy leader.

Shoot him a PM, I'm sure he'd share with you the details of his set up.
He knows the Phantom range better than most when it comes to getting it right, and getting the best from it.

Got 20" Mid

Hi all, I've got a 20" mid and shaft, on it's way to me. Do I take it, that by fitting this, I wont need to offset the engine. I can't move the batteries, (one each side), could turn the oil tank sideways and move it starboard a bit. Not getting any reply from the guy with the bow tank controls so may not have time to fit them. Any suggestions, Please.

Thanks

Peter

i'd try it in the middle first, if you have a bullet box then run it about 2" below, make sure you haven't got any play in the steering and you should be fine

While you have it apart you may want to fit solid mounts
