RB12 to start at Weymouth

Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) has focused the start of the winter months on a full throttle business push which looks set to prosper the Dorset region in the lead up to, during and post 2012.
Heavy weights of the yacht racing world including Sir Keith Mills, Rod Carr OBE, Jonathan Levy from the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and Maria Moynihan-Lee from the Galway stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race travelled to Dorset today in order to share their views on successful business practices.
The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy also took the opportunity to announce themselves as the national start and finish venue of the ‘Round Britain 2012’ (RB12) dubbed Britain’s biggest multi-faceted land, sea and air event, which will involve over 1,000 contestants and supporting crew during June 2012. Celebrations included appearances from an original Porsche GT40 Super Car, Twin Squirrel Helicopter and a Goldfish 36 P1 (Team Rooster) ‘the Fastest Diesel Production Boat in the World and the Fastest Rib to Round Britain in 08’. Despite this event using supercars, aircraft and powerboats, the organisers will be ensuring that RB12 incorporates carbon offsetting to ensure that the overall event is carbon neutral.
Speaking at the conference today John Tweed, Chief Executive of the WPNSA highlighted the importance of a business focus, ‘Weymouth and Portland are becoming buzzing event locations which is positive for the local Dorset economy. We feel that conferences bringing experienced individuals together can produce new ideas and opportunities for the future of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and we hope to build on all qualities of the area to bring future major yacht racing events to the South West and to ensure a prosperous future for the region.”

As an aside the GT40 is allegedly worth over £3,000,000 and is obviously an original Le Mans car. It was certainly interesting to rub shoulders with the great and the good from the sailing fraternity with some very important people there to listen to all of the presentations including the RB12 one.

That will teach me to read the stuff I copy and paste more thoroughly! Of course it's a Ford - I should know I had a replica GT40 for a couple of years - couldn't park it in a normal car park though and still get out of the stupid doors though!

Noel Edmonds and Jay K fit alright but then they can shop for clothes off action man sites, or in Noels case Barbie with the blouses he wears.

Somewhere between 5'6" and 5'7" and probably shrinking fast with all of the pounding from racing!

A newsletter just landed in the Inbox which is attached below.

If you can't be bothered to read it here are the major points:

32 paid entries

Fees capped at 1250 hp total or £10,938 + VAT

A discount scheme is still available (get the deposit in before the end of the year for the best deal) with an excellent package (to be announced) on shipping from the US

The first RB12 related Aero event to be in Germany at Aero Expo Europe in Bitburg

Don't forget the VAT goes up in January 2011!

Yes it is! 18 spaces left as the limit is now 50 boats due mainly to logistics and with the current environmental issues (Ask Mile Lloyd about them!) it makes sense to limit the entry to that number.

The entry for cars and planes is a set fee and yet boats is based on HP.
Why?

I'm sure there will be 20 grand cars and 300 grand cars.

Good question Barry - I will try and get an answer for you - it may be just historic, maybe ML can also answer the reason for the HP based entry fee?

As you say it's historic that the bigger the boat the more you pay.

I also understand that ML felt it was the only way to finance the race.
It appear the RB12 team are jumping on the band wagon.

What would happen if only the lower HP boats entered and the max is 50 boats would the fees cover the costs.

They do say that: "Imitation is the biggest form of flattery".

OK - Got some answers for you - as always you are invited to contact Stuart at RB12 directly and in the meantime I will continue to provide information for you and all on here -

Team pages will be published on the RB12 site very soon for the teams that want to make their interests known - some don't and their wishes will be respected. I won't start a list on here as it will get lost in a thread and never be as up to date as www.rb12.com

Neil McGrigor is the man in charge and it was him that made the decision to go with the existing entry fee arrangement for the boats. The boats have by far the biggest cost of the three elements, and whilst the existing arrangement won't be changed I'm sure Mike and his colleagues organising the Cowes Monaco race would be interested in suggestions for a fairer way of setting the entry fees. Another connected issue is the costs for boats are in many cases proportional to the size - bigger boat = higher marina charges and larger safety boats etc.

I believe the entry fees were worked out on an average of 630hp - if there are a lot of small boats the race will still run - that commitment has been made already.

I hope that answers your questions and please check on the website as the Team Pages will be up soon.
