There has been at least half a dozen different courses for the CTC hasn't there?
Maybe future races will always start from North Head, and a 'new' record could be based on the shortest distance from there, to Torquay (Ore Stone) and back to Cowes.
Sounds like a good challenge basis to me.
If the record is based on average speed, regardless of distance, I don't think it matters that the course is not the same, as it'll be roughly the same distance, along roughly the same endurance course, and back.
I think that being a race from Needles to Portland, then Torquay, and back again makes it pretty much the same family.

But you can not claim a record for the Cowes Torquay Cowes John if you start half way there

were you with achili when he averaged 90?
you can't claim the fastest elapsed time, but you can claim the highest average speed ever attained in the race.
Cutting out one of the Solent legs is hardly going to increase your average speed. more likely to reduce it with 'average' sea conditions in Lyme bay.

Average speed will be reduced with any increased distance and any reason that requires a reduced throttle input like a turn buoy so on the face of it I would assume Achili was moving faster in most sections than Buzzi was this CTC, to do a greater distance and take in more turn buoys and still be much the same average speed says Achilis was faster and all this is only valid should the distances travelled taking into account all buoys be 100% accurate and not just some rough guestimate

tis all rather academic unless the exact same course & distance was always used, which it wasn't. there have been many.
Therefore, the only comparison you can make is average speed. On Saturday, Buzzi went to Torquay and back and recorded a higher average speed than previously recorded during that race.
to be honest, even though tim says it was flat calm in '90, i'm sure it 'could' be flatter still, and have less boat wakes, etc, etc, so the whole making of comparisons is a little pointless, but none the less interesting.
As I say, Fabio recorded the highest average speed ever seen in the CTC events history, until he did that, it appears to have been Achilli, his average of 90.98mph was just as 'academic', because if next year, we run 1 mile further than Achilli did, his speed would then be deemed a non record. (If you use tims theory)
would be interesting to see what a current class 1 cat could do it in (assuming you could fit all that fuel in somewhere)

The couse in '90 went from Cowes thru the bridge bouys to boscombe along the beach then out to Peveril west to Paignton, Torquay, and home with a loop in the solent. I think it was 244nm.
Originally we went in a loop then west via Bournemouth to the Skerries (which has to be the smallest F***ing mark in the world) and virtually imposible to find till you get to it. With the Italians we always flew the course. But I learnt there were two tiny cottages (assuming you were bang on) to use as a land mark then onto Torquay and home.
The best way to see the mark was to do what Sir Max and Soppy did..

I wonder if a properly prepared plan for managing a RYS Line start, discussed with Cowes Harbourmaster during planning stages. And actually providing what is promised. Would see a return to the traditional Cowes Starts?

Cant see what the problem is with the new format. Running down the solent in convoy to hurst was great for the racers and the spectator boats as they ran along the sides and had great views only thing i'd like to change was the flag dropping at hurst without the stop.
With regard to inceasing the lengh of the CPC race how about 2 laps would give spectators more to see .

The majority of racers i spoke to seemed to favour the new procedure.

What happened to Taz, I thought he was entering the CTC with Hutchy in his P28?

It certainly finished in a quick time, but I wouldn't have thought a 30' chris cat with trip 2.4's would be that quick.
Divin is one of me all time favourites.

I was with the Harbour Master on the start boat.
His major concern was where the finish marks were.
I called Tony Fiddy on the Island, and the problem was "sort of" dealt with.

What was Mr Fiddy doing at the event, and was it in a position of authority, considering he "dropped the ball" on the round britain.
