Rules 1, Competitor nil!

Who'd have thought it, been working on a 28 Phantom (copy) with a pair of 300 Promax's, plan being to run it in Marathon class C.

Had it measured today, and it's too short, and the motors are too big by 44cc's.

Another Phantom "they" seem desperte to exclude from Racing. It is hilarious that in a time when theres seems little to no new blood in the sport, someone comes along and buys a 25 year old design, spends god knows how much money and dont fit the rules!

I assume though:

C Sport: No Motor Limits, so its just a Length issue
C Stock: Motors and Length Issue.

However, @ 280kg/M your customer will need to be chatting up his nearest lead suppliers!

Class D is out, Could go Cruiser G as Martin McG "Power Products Marine" did in RB08 although I suspect that may (if measured) fallen fowl of the cabin sizes. Also, if the customer wanted to race in G, he'd best be buying Shares in that local Lead suppliers (as its 394KG/M), I can only assume that got glossed over pre RB08 as well.

I have the answer............ Enter Class E, you'll just have to remove a motor Mind you, atleast Gordon C will get a run for his money.

Lets just hope there isnt anyone else intending on doing Marathon with a twin 3.0L Merc powered P28 ................... oh no, wait a minute

Who in their right mind would run a 28 footer in C class?

C was meant for bigger stuff.

I would expect to see a 28 in E or D.

Surprised it only measures 26'5" though.

Would have thought length and engine capacity would have been fairly easy to determin before thinking about spending any money on it.

Yes. XR2's and it would be a cheap E boat, cheaper entry, cheaper to run, etc, etc. Crazy. oh well.

We put the engines back in our E class boat today. should run by the weekend.

All joking aside. This is not the first time I have heard of boats measuring then not, As I understand years ago, the measurements changed from top of transom to the keel, losing the rake of the transom therefore losing inches. But I stand to be corrected.

Correctamundo.

Still surprised it only measures 26'5" from bow to bottom of transom.

Mind you, the OB version of the 28 had a plant in the mould giving more transom angle, which would exaggerate the issue a bit. (by maybe 3") and those splashes derived from an OB P28 (I think Taz's one)

What if someone had run a Phantom 28 with 2x300hp in RB08 ( I'm sure their was one entered although it may not have taken part ) would not the grandfather rule then not apply copy or not

no, grandfather rights don't apply to all similar boats, only the actual one raced, and as you say, it didn't even do that.

Suggestion:
Depending on how far you have got with the build and that the owner wants to race at Cowes, ask the organisers for a special dispensation to take part with a time penalty in each race of say 5 or 10 mins. Then ask those others taking part in that class if they have a problem with that.

Some will say and maybe rightly "Rules are Rules" but Cowes is special this year. Just a thought.
