RYA-feedback

This Info is not aimed at this forum but can hopefully get to where it needs to from here.Hi I'm looking to take part this year in some Basic Races and have searched on here and found some correspondense about previous Intro Offers from the RYA which I understand has caused some controversey-don't really want to get involved with that.but in these threads it mentions Basic Licenses-looking at the RYA webb site and 2009 license application there is no mention of a Basic license, would this mean I have to either buy a Day license maximum of two per year? or a full license ££££££££/Medical!!!!!!!!and if a Basic License is available would I need a medical?or have I missunderstood. Previously I have asked on here for info and pointers to where I can find info and received a great response but untimately the majority of the current info should come from the RYA and I do find that promoting 'Intro Offers'To new Racers quite amusing as I have contacted the RYA twice and recieved a very poor response,Their Webb site presumes you allready understand a lot about classes, boat requirements Safety kit etc but if you don't then shouldn't they not supply this info in a Simple Guide. The PB1/06 Rule Book has upteen ammendments to be added to it to bring it up to date(Presumably last printed in 2006?)If the majority of the info I need is in the Rule Book Why can't this Rule Book be attached to the webb site?If the reason it can't be on the webb site is loss of revenue I believe £5 per book is this not short sighted,I've previously taken part in Motorcross and Autograss Racing and have never found it so difficult to get info about a sport.I'm not looking to do a full seasons racing(can't afford it)but am getting very frustrated by the lack of info available so hopefully for the good of the sport and to attract New Racers the RYA might make this info more readily available/user friendly.Or perhaps i'll buy another Bike
PS Hopefully someone from the RYA is on this Forum-I'm happy to talk
PPS most of the info on the RYA webb site refers to 2008 where's the 2009 events calender?

I can sympathise with you on the RYA lack of encouragement for newcomers into the sport. I am not sure what the latest situation is regarding basic licences but if you need any information on equipment you need for basic racing then pm me and I will try and help. The first basic race is the Brass Monkey at Poole on Feb 7th, if you ring Hazel Cox at the RMYC she will be pleased to send you details. There is a basic at Allhallows in Kent on the weekend of April 25/26th run by Allhallows Yacht Club and the new club SEPA. The annual Cancer charity race, again at Poole is on June 6/7th. There may be others which will be hopefully on the upcoming calendar.
I have had a moan at the RYA myself this season regarding the lack of updates on their website. Any news referring to the "rag and stick" brigade seems to be instantly entered but the powerboating side seems to be sadly lacking. The results for all the powerboat classes are from 2007, not one entry was made for 2008. Even when Roy Smith, a Brit, won the class3C World Championships on British soil, there was not even a mention on the website. Hopefully things will change in 2009.

Unhappy

I also agree with you - I'm very interested in the Marathon events and see today forms are out enabling me to apply and pay my entry fee. However I cant find out what if any licence I require, do I need a medical, life jacket/crash helmet spec, do I have to have intercom and safety kit required to be carried. Very frustrating.
End result is I am very loathed to send of an application and cheque without knowing the full S.P.

So true Ian, maybe it's to do with the name. The "Y" bit seems to be the all & end all.

I totally agree.

My best mate who hadn't raced for 20 years managed to get licenced, suited and booted for the RB '08 race within a few phone calls.

For NICSURREY;

As for the lack of information on the RYA site - email the RYA Powerboat Racing Manager - and tell him your thoughts.

Maybe your still not on this planet, but the RYA is the governing body.
The clubs that don't follow the rules have limited vision & are not a good start for new-commers.
Agreed, the Powerboat section of the RYA need a kick in the bollocks to get them up to speed, but when your mum tells you not to stick you hand in the hot oven, there is a good reason!

I disagree Bob. (Isn't a democracy great)

They are the national Authority that should carry the flag forward.
Nice to see all the ducks in a row for 2012 yachting locations, events, schedule & a nice new HQ in portland to. Hey why dont they make these facilities available for RB12 good harbour ect,ect or run other races from it !!!!! All members of the same authority, with the same goals after all.

Nic is quite correct there is no mention of event licences in 2009 according to the web site, maybe they dont exist now.

True, but they HAVE to run them the way the RYA state, and ultimately the RYA write the rules for the national racing, licence requirement etc, and it's a (plethera of) RYA commitee(s) who decide what you need for racing. So they really should make it easy to get the info from their site.

Send John Puddifoot an email. His job depends on the success powerboat racing. he may not be aware (or could have forgotten) that the required info is not up to date on the RYA site.

I only suggested the others email him, rather than me, or you, or mike, because if enough people who are actually showing interest in racing give them a nudge, it might have more impact.
