Exclamation Trailer Towing Licence

Just a bit of info

Did everyone know that if you passed your driving test after Jan 1997 you will NOT have a category B+E on your Driving license automatically and you will have to pass a separate trailer test to tow anything legally over 750KGS i.e. Trailer inc boat inc all equipment in the boat!! Also you can only be in control of a combined weight of 3 ton i.e. tow vehicle of 2.25 ton inc equipment max and what ever you’re towing inc trailer max 750KGS. If you don’t have a B+E and have an accident or if someone even hits you and rights off the boat or tow vehicle. You wont get a penny from the insurance and you will get a whole heap of points on your license or even loose your driving licence. Just a word of warning as this happened to someone down are way a few weeks back!!!

towing

and another thing to check,
if you have insurance on a car and you hop into your mates pickup to move your boat you may not be covered, because pickup's are classified as commercial vehicles they are not always covered by a private use policy! (check the small print, if it states that you are entitled to drive with permission another persons "vehicle" or if it states"car")

you have only got to check out some of the insurance web sites.
when they say policy tailored to your needs they should say "we will let you drive the car for a couple of mile but everything eles is going to cost you extra!"

without B+E you can tow upto 750kg unbraked. You can tow a trailer over 750kg as long as the MAM of your trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of your towing vehicle and the combination of the 2 does not exceed 3500kg

The unladen weight of my freelander is 1450kg so I have changed the capacity plate on my trailer to 1400kg.

I have spoke to my mates husband who is a traffic copper and he said that he doesnt know if changing the rated capacity of your trailer is legal or not. But he did say that no copper would ever know the difference between the original and the one you have done yourself and as long as the gross weight of your trailer is below the MAM of your trailer I dont think they would really care.
The problem with insurance companys, those of you who have ever written a car off will know, is they will do EVERYTHING they can to wriggle and worm themselves out of paying out.

Just another point to know about if you are using a Van/Pickup taxation class 'Light Goods Vehicle' if the GVW ie VAN/LOAD/TRAILER/BOAT exceeds 3.5t GVW then you have to run with a Tacho, this only applies if its being used commercially ie;Hire or Reward, aparently Private use this does not apply. The Police have been targeting the Tow vehicles leaving the Car Auctions.Just pointing this out for people in the Boat trade as in most cases it would be private use or your doing the job free of charge.Cheers
