Venture 2014

The 'Venture Cup' may be down, but 'Venture 2014' will see four crews leave London this Saturday morning from St Katharine Docks to undertake the adventure of a lifetime as they aim to conquer over 2,500 miles of tough seas, with the ultimate goal being an arrival into Monaco on Sunday 22nd June.

The teams are currently assembling at St Katharine Docks in the heart of London, and will be on display to the public over the coming days. They are:
1. Cube52 (formerly 'Boss One'
2. Tally-Ho
3. Grey Ghost
4. Hot Lemon

The teams themselves will be on site with the boats, so if you're around London please drop down and say hello.

The fleet can be tracked live right across the two weeks at the following address:
http://venturetrack.co.uk/

The latest news from the teams during the race will be placed here:

He's only going as far as Jersey John - trackers are only on the ones going all the way

Blimp, can you go into more detail about this quote of yours on the VC site please?

"..and that was how it started. The second day hasn't even begun, and Grey Ghost Racing have already fallen foul of sabotage. We had been aware of some discontentment in the camp due to Grey Ghost deciding yesterday to ignore the gentleman's agreement of staying together, and giving their Yanmars the beans, so in some ways this kind of thing can only be expected ..... but never condoned."

Mike - it was in jest. Paul, Tim and Neil broke ranks yesterday by driving hard for the last few hours, so they were repaid this morning with some 'adjustments' made to their boat in black tape.

The full report from yesterday is now published:

Claire - I was in London on Friday, but I'm back here in Ireland for the rest of the journey. Getting updates from the back-end of the trackers, regular calls to the teams (eg: Boss / Cube 52 are currently enjoying a 'comfort break') plus the contacts we have in the venues they're going to.

I wouldn't worry too much about them heading off early today - there's a bit of light-hearted banter and mischief between the teams at the moment. They're all being fully tracked, timed, etc. from when they start each day and not from any specific timing point.

Renegade - Max is off living life to the fullest on superyachts at the moment (at least that's what I understand). Crew is Robin, Tim and Kevin.

Is there anyway of following the tracker in more detail Aidan, course, speed etc rather than just a number on a map?

Also if it's not a race and just a cruise, why is there a need to have them timed for each leg? Surely for safety if it's just a cruise, running a buddy system of cruising as a pack is safer across open water with no support craft. I know these guys are experienced, but on any endurance cruise I have entered (RB, Round Ireland, Round Scotland etc) we tend to pair up with similar performance craft or experienced crew shadowing less experienced etc. If they all jet off separately, if something goes wrong they might have wished to have a boat within a few miles range.

Purely my thoughts on a long distance pleasure cruise in safety as well as companinship and sharing experiences.

Well done too for running your blog and trying to highlight their travels, you seem to be the only one publicly from VC who is trying to at least be proactive from a bad situation. It's good to see that you are working hard to try your best at assisting crews etc, as seems without any back up from the other board members, however we feel about the VC demise, I certainly feel you have taken the brunt of the fall and in the hour of need others have been very quiet to back you up or stand by their company. Well done for trying to do something to rescue some updates for those that are choosing to run.

Thanks Tom - to be fair, there are still some of the organising team working away in the background ...and of course Robin is out there on the water.

With regards to the tracking, we're being overly cautious not to give any impression of racing, to ensure that the teams don't run the risk of any sanctions. All of the data is being stored so that we can show each individual team what they're combined time was (...because they asked for it). From tomorrow on you should be able to see tracks/speeds from previous days, but we won't be showing this data live (deliberate choice). To be honest, we've been really impressed with this new system from Plant-i ....it hasn't put a foot wrong yet, and the support from the guys back in Wales has been great. Couldn't recommend them more.

As for how the teams operate on the water, that's entirely their decision for the next 2 weeks. All we can do is help to tell their story. I'm sure they'll settle into a familiar, structured routine pretty quickly.

Some of them took it relatively easy yesterday and are fine today ....some pushed on and are aching ....while Matt Wilson is obviously nursing a pretty re-modelled face (we've a reward for the first picture in of him, so that shouldn't take long!)

Stowaway.

It's great to hear the stowaway on board Hot Lemon is ok - perhaps he's out there again today.

As happened at a Cowes Torquay Cowes race a few years ago, had the said person been under age with no race licence it would have meant a 5 year ban from racing for the crew of the the boat. This happened under the stewardship of Ciao. It didn't do much for the sport and certainly wasn't great for the race team.

Well done Aidan in getting this going. Am loving the snippets that are coming out. Good luck and safety to all concerned.
