(Thread split from 'A Simpler Future?')

JF

-----------------------------------------------------------

I apologise for what is going to sound long winded, but some of the suggestions on this thread make perfect sense.

I digress little to another thread where I read the dissatisfaction of competitors with the RYA.

2 years ago I took a brand new race concept to the RYA and was welcomed with the popularity of a French kiss at a funeral, which forces me to take my race concept and race boats outside of the RYA.

My race concept is not off shore for the very reasons outlined in this thread, i.e. difficulty of capturing powerboat racing on camera for TV use, the difficulties of making powerboat racing exciting to spectators from a visual point of view, we are working hard to promote the new series and have a letter of intent from Sky Sport, promising 6 x 24 .5 minute slots promoting the new series.

My race series and boat was a pipe dream some 7 years ago and it is only now beginning to look like reality. I sympathies with competitors with their dissatisfaction with the RYA and I see the problems with the lack of support from spectators from the visual aspect, I would like to think that Viper Racing UK has addressed these problems so much so I have registered and protected the race format.

I by no means wish to use this forum to promote my race series but I would like your opinion, visit www.viperracinguk.co.uk and check the race concept page.

Of course you do! I'm sure no one will mind though

Looks like a lot of fun, but:

What would Viper racing offer that OCR doesn't?
Do you think you can persuade enough people to buy one of these, given that its only use would be for this specialised race series?
If someone buys a boat, what guarantee do they have that a race series will take place? It doesn't look like the 2005 series happened . . .

More favourable water conditions, the fact that we are inshore ie lakes.
Spectators are probably going to be no further than 300 metres from a competing boat.
The competing boats run individually against the clock, making the race circuit a level playing field and not driving in anyones wake.
The event is aimed to be fast, furious and ultimately entertaining for competitors and spectators alike. (please accept this is not circuit racing, it is stage rallying on water)

The boat is fully CE marked and therefore does not exclude it for a leisure purpose, however you can not buy one without committing to the race series.

It was very optmistic of us to asume that the RYA would help with our new race series which defaulted the 2005 race series, which is now been deferred to 2006 depending on sponsors.
Viper Racing UK would not accept payment or deposit for any of their boats unless they knew that the race series will commence.

Thanks for your comments, and can I please take this opportunity to agree with you on the comments you have made on this thread

Regards

??

so do we take it as the boats race against the clock they are not actually racing against each other. therefore no close racing for the public to see or the drivers to enjoy? and your not selling boats without owners making a commitment to racing?

For what its worth I would love to have a go at racing in any form. I dont have the quickest boat on here, in fact far from it but I would enjoy just to have a go. I seen a few emails this week about even trying to make ski racing a bit easier to get envolved in (ie hands out front) and anything like this must be good news. The way I see it is if you have a BIG wallet then you can race (in one form or another) otherwise you just have to sit here and listem how fast people have gone!!!
Surely the people at the top must make it easier for people to come and have a go at EVERY level???
Cheers

and also £250-350 per race day for 3 x 5 mins races to be honest i don't think anyone will touch that when OCR costs £150 for a weekend 2x 1 hour or 1 x 1 hour plus 2 x 1/2 hr races.

I wish you well, but I suspect that your market is going to be too limited.

Now, if you had the finances to build a fleet of boats and run corporate events with them it might be a completely different story!

Interestingly enough, the RYA seemed to be quite keen on Kiwi-style jet boating a year or two ago and that's not a million miles away from your concept. Seems to have gone a bit quiet since then though.

Under Johnny Rocket's "new world order" you could do exactly that.

Minimal costs and regulations for the racing infrastructure, then run your own class with your own rules.

Are there many other clubs like yours? I haven't come across any -- is there a list somewhere?

Yeh to right. We could charge a load to join and only let me and you race because we both have some white bits on our boats, that way I`m sure that we could both finish up with a trophy at the end of the 4 races!!!
Is it me or are the racing calenders getting shorter?

On the contary Thunderbird, racing against the clock is well supported, downhill skiing, bob sleigh racing, WRC car rallying, sprint, hill climb, and even show jumping are supported by 10's of thousands of people and in my experience close racing in the powerboat world is very rare and definately not covered by TV. So with respect to driver enjoyment can I suggest you try racing against the clock or a time set by a fellow competitor and with respect to public enjoyment you need to see a Viper perform.

With respect it is cheaper per race with OCR, however combine it with the other RYA costs which do not occur with Viper Racing it is not that different and again with respect ,how many OCR drivers end up on TV!!

With respect to cost, Viper Racing UK offer each individual the chance of a British Title without having to buy a race boat, you can infact be apart of a televised race event by leasing one of 6 race prepared Vipers for the 2006 series.

Its an opportunity you may or may not want to be apart of, to date our greatest response is from the motor racing world and not the powerboat world.
