Thames cruise

Once the weather sorts its self out would anyone fancy a blast from Putney to say, sheppey?
The river Thames is a nice blast.
or at least down the river then a nice pint?

If you're reckoning on going at a decent speed between Putney and just below Tower Bridge then be prepared for a chat with a PLA patrol about their advisory 12 knot speed limit

To be honest, as long as you show some common sense they are ok, i was pulled over a few times last year but only for a spot check. anti terrorism stuff. and to take some details.
Also pulled over this year.

The old bill on the river are pretty cool with fast boats if you are safe.. ( the ones i have met are).

In one respect it could have been worse as they were originally talking about down to greenwich pier.

On the other they have conveniently defined all craft rather than just the commercials which were the problem in the first place.

I have a feeling this is just the thin edge of the wedge.

I think you might have missed Johnnys point that it's only come in in the last few weeks.

Point taken. thanks for that johnny.
I will pop down and speak to the police on that as i think it is a bit hazy, ie; if the orificer pulling you over is having a bad day you'll get booked even though it is advisory.
Wont hurt to get it from them straight.

Please let us know what they say. I suspect that the Old Bill won't be too interested, but the PLA patrols might try to bend your ear.

Either way, so long as you don't take the piss then I would be surprised if you get any major grief. Showing a bit of willing by keeping it down between Lambeth and the Tower would probably be sensible.

I think as long as they can see you wearing jackets and genrally being safe i think they will be ok.

I think the problems will come when the once a year idiots go bombing down near heavy traffic.

Will keep you posted
Paul

Thames speed limit.

Hello all.
TO who it may interest, i have spoken to the thames river police today about the 12 knot advisory limit.
This is governed by the PLA ( port of london authority).
It is aimed at the large high speed passenger clippers that use the river.
According do the guy i spoke to it is all about the wash that these craft produce. They are also causing problems with moorings.
If any one wants to use the river for a run, common sense is everything and the collisions at sea act are what to follow.
There is no speed limit after Putney bridge down stream, of course wreckless and dangerous behaviour will get you nicked.
So as long as safety is first, all is ok. I would reccomend wearing life jackets on the river so if you do get an ID check which is very common near westminster, the police will see you are responsible, and they will be ok with you.

All the best and i hope this may be of interest and help.
Paul

Thanks for checking that out. It sounds like common sense may be winning for now!

...and it will also mean that an actual, enforced speed limit is more likely in the medium to long term.

I always understood that the speed limit was from Wandsworth Bridge. I used to launch at Putney hard quite a bit (many years ago), and we always trundled down to below Wandsworth before getting on plane. (two bridges downstream of Putney)
