A poker run is basically a good excuse to tear about with other boaters.

A course is set, usually around the solent area, which has 5 stop/check points.

There is a mass start, similar to that of a powerboat race, and the boats travel to the first checkpoint (usually a boat, anchored in a bay somewhere)

Once everyone has arrived, the boats all pass the check boat in turn, who is holding out a fishing net full of sealed envelopes. You pick an envelope at random (leaving it sealed).

Throughout the day you collect a total of 5 envelopes. At each checkpoint, once the collecting of cards, chatting etc has finished, there is a start procedure like the first.

A lunch stop somewhere sometimes makes up one of the stops.

Once back at base for the evening, there is a party, food, music etc, and then the card game itself.

Each team is invited to the stage to bring it's 5 sealed envelopes (that were picked completely at random) and to have the compare, (usualy the beautifully acidic Mark Pascoe) rip the piss out of you. There, the envelopes are opened and the as yet unknown cards from within are put up on the game board as 'a hand'.
The team with the highest poker hand of cards wins the pot.

You know, i'd been wanting to ask that question for a few months but was too embarrassed! So thankyou to you both!!

For some reason i figured it was something to do with drug smuggling, just without the drugs. does that even make sense?

Sounds good fun, .I thought it would be an excuse for a blast arround but did not know about the Card/Poker bit-Cheers.What kind of distance is usually covered? and entry fee?do you need to plot a course to each destination?or just follow a lead boat?

They have been around 70 miles, although Taz only does 35.
The fee is but about 50 quid.
No need to plot a course as you can easily follow the lead boat - is not a race...

Entry is a little more than that these days I'm affraid darren.

I think it's probable that entry this year will be around £100 for boat & driver, and about £30 per extra crew member.

Given the financial climate and general uncertainty, for one to happen at all, there will need to be some strong comitment in advance from people wanting to take part, and a £50 deposit (non returnable after a certain date). If the numbers don't add up by say end of May, it'll be pulled and deposits returned. If the numbers do add by that date, deposits become non refundable, as bookings will start be made at marinas, food suppliers etc.

There wasn't a PR last year because of RB08, Cowes etc, but it is the intention of Gareth & Gill to run one at the end of june 09 if Possible. (June 27th possibly)

Show hands if interested.

So it is, but then again I usually send in the £50 deposit and on the morning during registration I am too busy trying to beat you to the doughnuts to notice how much money I am giving to Gill.

Now Daren, you and I both know that is a hopelessly optomistic challenge to set yourself!

KNOW YOUR LIMITS!!

Hopefully see you in June.
